It was back in the olden days – mid-2020 – when we first reported on Nissan’s all-new Ariya electric SUV.

Our first guess was it’d hit Australian showrooms by early 2022, but after years of delays and uncertainty, we can announce, to trumpeted fanfare, the Ariya definitely, absolutely and finally debuts Down Under in September, priced from $55,840 plus on-roads.

A mid-size electric SUV to rival the Tesla Model Y, the entry-level Ariya Engage undercuts the best-selling American EV by a few grand (Model Y RWD is $58,900 before on-roads), at least until the promised cheaper Tesla arrives here.

There are four Ariya model grades, with the aforementioned Engage and Advance ($59,840) using a 63kWh battery for 385km range, and a single motor with 160kW and 300Nm sent through the front wheels.

Better-specification Advance+ ($63,840) and Evolve e-4ORCE ($71,840) employ an 87kWh battery, the former offering 504km range and the latter 487km.

The Advance+ boosts output to 178kW, while the Evolve’s the hot one with dual electric motors offering 160kW over each axle, 600Nm combined torque and 0-100km/h time of 5.6 seconds.

2025 Nissan Ariya EV is priced from $55,840 plus on-roads.

There’s no hiding the Ariya is an old EV, having been on sale overseas since early 2022. It shares platforms with the already-here Renault Megane E-Tech EV, with maximum AC charge speed of 22kW and 130kW DC charge speed.

After numerous false dawns surrounding Ariya’s arrival here, how our market takes to Nissan’s second full EV (joining the slow-selling Leaf) will be interesting to see.

Nissan’s endured a rocky few years with major restructuring following job losses, factory closures and financial woes. In Australia, sales are down 17 per cent over last year.

Working to Ariya’s advantage is Nissan Australia’s 10-year/300,000km warranty, if serviced through Nissan dealers.

The Ariya can be ordered now ahead of showroom arrivals at the start of September.
