Porsche Macan and Tesla Model Y Performance EV-conqueror teased: Triple motor Alpine A390 could be the best-driving mid-size SUV yet!

Created to battle it out with the latest Porsche Macan EV and incoming Juniper Tesla Model Y Performance, the production-ready Alpine A390 electric coupe SUV will be officially unwrapped on May 27.

Already previewed by the rakish Alpine A390 Beta concept, the new A390 promises to contuinue what the small Alpine A110 coupe started by setting a new benchmark for handling within the electric mid-size performance SUV segment.

Based on the Renault Group’s AmpR Medium EV platform, that already underpins the Renault Megane E-Tech, A390 will be priced to target the likes of the BMW iX2 and Tesla Model Y while out-driving the more expensive Porsche Macan.

To help it set new standards, the Alpine A390 will come with an all-new triple-motor powertrain that mounts a single e-motor on the front axle, with two more driving the rear axle.

Active torque vectoring, meanwhile, will be employed to help the rakish SUV-coupe mimic the driving dynamics of the lightweight A110.

If you’re wondering what the A390 name stands for, the ‘3’ is said to reference its size while the ’90’ refers to how usable it is every day.

Since the A390 Beta concept was claimed to be around 85 per cent the finished item, expect the real Alpine mid-sizer to keep the show car’s radical looks and for it to sport a set of the concept’s lightweight snowflake-mimicking alloy wheels.

However, expect them to shrink in size from the Beta’s 22-inch (front) and 23-inch (rear) and for them to miss out on the ability to glow blue while torque vectoring is taking place.

But it’s been tipped the keep the concept’s frontal styling, frameless doors and, even, the Le Mans-racer-style dorsal fin and a development of the original car’s active rear spoiler.

Inside, the still-futuristic cabin will lose the shape-shifting bucket seat and F1-style steering wheel, although the snowy, mountainous Alp theme will remain.

There’s still no word on what battery or range the Alpine A390 will come with, nor how closely it will be priced to the Tesla Model Y Performance, but more will be revealed on May 27.
