Jeep tames Tesla! Watch the Jeep Wagoneer S best the Tesla Model Y Performance on track

Jeep has released a new video of its 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S indulging in a track battle with the Tesla Model Y Performance ahead of the SUV-coupe’s debut on May 30.

In the latest short film, which follows multiple teasers and a leak, the US car brand reaffirms the Jeep Wagoneer S will produce 447kW and 836Nm of torque from its all-electric powertrain – enough to launch from 0-60mph (0-97km/h) in just 3.4 seconds, although that figure includes subtracting the US-style 1ft rollout.

Unsurprisingly, considering it’s a Jeep promo, the Wagoneer S comprehensively beats the Tesla Model Y Performance for both acceleration and handling.

During the video Jeep declared that when the Wagoneer S lands it will have a driving range of more than 300 miles (483km).

Remaining faithful to the original 2022 concept, in its latest appearance the Wagoneer S shows off its illuminated seven-slot front grille, smooth side surface, flush glass and squared-off wheel arches and rakish rear lines.

Within the new Model Y rival there’s a fully digital instrument cluster, widescreen infotainment touch-screen and Ferrari-style passenger display. A lower touch-screen operates the climate control and seating, minimising buttons throughout.

It’s thought the range-topping versions will come equipped with a huge panoramic roof, ambient lighting system, 19-speaker McIntosh sound system and single rotary selector for Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system, which pre-arms the all-wheel drive and traction control for Sand, Snow, Eco, Auto and Sport modes.

Set to be the first ever vehicle to ride on parent Stellantis’ state-of-the-art STLA Large platform, the Jeep Wagoneer S will soon be joined by the more rugged all-electric Defender-rivalling Jeep Recon – and both have been confirmed for the Australian market.
