Polestar teases Precept EV, offers more 3 SUV details
Australia-bound Swedish-Chinese electric car challenger Polestar has shown its elegant Precept four-door coupe in pre-production form for the first time.
It has also dropped more details about next year’s Polestar 3 large SUV.
An image of the Precept, due in production “before 2025”, was posted by Polestar in a media statement promoting its newly-established UK research and development facilities. That’s it at the top of this story.
The vehicle is not identified but it’s clearly the Tesla Model S rival, which the UK Polestar team is focussing on developing.
Notable changes from the concept include the abandonment of suicide rear doors and the replacement of cameras with side mirrors. Promisingly, it looks like the gorgeous exterior design fundamentals have been retained.
“Precept is a statement of intent for the brand in terms of design, technology and sustainability,” Pete Allen, Head of Polestar UK R&D said.
“The production car will take an important step on the journey towards climate neutrality, and ours will be the team that delivers that.”
The current plan is to build the Precept in China. It will utilise the same Scalable Product Architecture 2 platform that’ll underpin the Polestar 3 and next-generation Volvo XC90 due in 2022, which will be all-electric only as well.
Volvo has also announced the next XC60 mid-sized SUV will also be electric only and will use new batteries developed in a joint venture with Northvolt.
No powertrain details have been revealed about the Precept as yet.
Meanwhile, Polestar boss Thomas Ingenlath told media at the 2021 Munich motor show the Polestar 3 will only have two rows of seats, ensuring separation from the XC90.
It will also come with a choice of single and dual powertrains, as per the Polestar 2, with the higher spec version offering more performance than the XC90.
Polestar launches in Australia in November with the Polestar 2, a Tesla Model 3 rival that will also be offered with single and dual motor drivetrains.
