Revealed! BYD Denza Bao 8 SUV expected to land within 12 months to challenge Toyota LandCruiser, Prado and Ford Everest

A fresh trademark application for the Fangchengbao Bao 8 has been filed with IP Australia, suggesting the BYD Shark 6-related SUV is close to being green lit for our market.

The advanced plug-in will size up against the likes of the Ford Everest and latest Toyota Prado, with the hot tip being it will land here within the next 12 months.

Still to be officially confirmed for Australia, despite the new patent, the Bao 8 is tipped to be badged as part of the upmarket BYD spin-off Denza when it launches later this year.

That makes sense because its smaller brother, the Bao 5, is expected to be badged as a Denza locally.

When it lands, expect the Bao 8 to offer up to three rows of seating and imposing dimensions of 5195 mm long, 1994 mm wide and 1905 mm tall.

That means the rugged 4×4 dwarfs even the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series.

But expect the pricing to be more in line with the Prado, potentially starting in the $70,000 bracket.

A series sketches show almost every angle and every key detail of the Bao 8, from the full-width front lighting signature through to the integrated spare wheel carrier on the tailgate.

Intriguingly, there are two sets of Bao 8 sketches on the IP Australia site. The earlier set show the same fascia as the model sold in China, while the latter set – pictured here – show the Prado-style recatngular grille.

That means the Bao 8 will sport styling cues clearly inspired by the latest boxy Prado.

Inside, expect a mix of the Shark 6 plug-in ute’s chunky cabin combined with higher-grade materials.

Under the bonnet BYD’s rugged full-size SUV should come with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol-electric plug-in hybrid system that will produce a substantial 550kW/760Nm.

Combined with a 36.8kWh Blade lithium iron phosphate battery pack, the Bao 8 should come with an all-electric range of around 125km on the lenient CLTC test cycle.

Brim the 91.5-litre tank and charge that battery and the Prado rival should be capable of covering around 1200km.

Like the Shark 6, towing will be limited to 2500kg but the three-row SUV is blazingly fast, with 0-100km/h taking just 4.8 seconds.
