Kia EV4 sedan priced for Australia: Korean contender undercuts Tesla Model 3, challenges BYD Seal

Kia Australia has confirmed pricing for the new Kia EV4 sedan ahead of its arrival in local showrooms later this month.

The brand’s newest electric passenger car, fresh from finishing third in the European Car of the Year, has been positioned directly against established rivals the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal.

The EV4 sedan will be offered in three trim levels – Air, Earth and GT-Line – with prices starting from $49,990 before on-road costs.

That makes the EV4 Air the second-cheapest electric sedan currently on sale in Australia, sitting just above the BYD Seal Dynamic, which remains the most affordable EV sedan in the market.

Based on Kia’s E-GMP electric vehicle platform, the EV4 range opens with the Air Standard Range, powered by a 58.3kWh battery and single front-mounted motor. Kia quotes a WLTP driving range of 456km for the entry model.

Stepping up, the Earth Long Range and GT-Line variants both use a larger 81.4kWh battery, with Kia claiming a WLTP range of up to 612km, making it the longest-range electric vehicle in Kia’s Australian line-up to date.

Kia says the EV4 has undergone a dedicated local ride and handling program, resulting in a bespoke suspension tune aimed at Australian road conditions. Full specifications will be released soon.

How EV4 pricing compares with key rivals

In the current Australian market, the BYD Seal Dynamic remains the cheapest electric sedan on sale, with pricing from $46,990 before on-road costs. The Kia EV4 Air, at $49,990, slots in immediately above it as the second most affordable option in the segment.

Above those sit the BYD Seal Premium, priced from $52,990 and the Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive, listed from $54,900.

Meawhile, longer vramge and more powerful variants from both Tesla and BYD push pricing into the low-to-mid $60,000 range and beyond, where they are joined by the flagship Kia EV4 GT-Line.

What’s next in the electric sedan segment?

Attention will now turn to where the incoming Mazda 6e will be priced when it launches in Australia by mid-year. The Mazda is expected to slot into the same mid-size electric sedan category, potentially adding further pricing pressure in a segment that is already becoming increasingly competitive.
