Galaxy quest: Yet another Chinese brand headed to Australia and its pricing could be out of this world
Voracious Chinese auto giant Geely has announced the all-new 2024 Galaxy E5 electric SUV will spearhead its fledgling new brand’s global expansion including to Australia.
Timing for the Aussie launch has yet to be revealed but Geely is already sending two new brands to the Australian market, Zeekr and Lynk & Co, which are expected to be up and running here by 2025 or 2026.
They’ll join established Geely group brands Volvo and Polestar in Australia. The Geely brand itself has also investigated coming to Australia with models such as the Radar ute.

Other Chinese EV brands either here or looking to join the Aussie invasion are MG, GWM Ora, BYD, LDV, Leapmotor and Nio.
Previewing the battery-powered Tesla Model Y fighter ahead of its official debut at the Beijing motor show next month, Galaxy says the E5 will be the first model it produces that will be available in left- and right-hand drive.
Despite the brand only just celebrating its first birthday last month, the Galaxy E5 will be the fourth model in the car-maker’s line-up. More impressive, it is also one of three all-new models that will be introduced in 2024.
When it hits Galaxy showrooms following the show, it’s been reported the E5 could come with ultra-low pricing, with the most basic versions selling for just 150,000 Chinese Yuan ($32,000) giving it the upper hand over more established rivals like Tesla Model Y.
With right-hand drive already confirmed an insider working for the Geely-owned brand has admitted that senior execs are keen to replicated BYD’s success and push ahead with its plans to launch in right-hand drive markets with Australia, along with the UK, Japan and South Africa already identified as regions of interest.
Timings have yet to be revealed but previously Galaxy’s parent, Geely, had declared it was interested in coming to the Australian market and two other Geely Group brands, Zeekr and Lynk & Co, are expected here by 2025.
It’s expected more details on the brand’s global expansion will be revealed at the Beijing show as well as full specification of the Galaxy E5.
Other models that could eventually head Down Under include the current hybrid-powered L6 and L7 sedans or the all-electric E8 SUV that recently made headlines as the world’s slipperiest car, thanks to its advanced aerodynamics.
