Another cheap VW EV confirmed! Affordable Volkswagen ID. 2X small SUV concept locked in for September debut
Volkswagen has confirmed it will unwrap a concept version of its all-electric replacement for the small T-Cross this September named ID. 2X.
Developed alongside the Volkswagen ID. 2 that launches later this year, the 2026 Volkswagen ID. 2X is a more rugged, higher riding take on the battery-powered small hatch that’s been created to rival the inbound Renault 4 E-Tech.
It’s not yet known if the production version will keep the ‘ID. 2X’ badging, as the ID. 2 is now tipped to switch to a more familiar ‘ID. Polo’ nameplate.

It follows this new small SUV would adopt the ID. T-Cross name. Although, it wouldn’t be the simplest name to roll off the tongue.
Not confirmed is whether other brands within the Volkswagen Group will sell their own version of the ID. 2X, but it’s likely as it’s already been confirmed the ID.2 will spin off to underpin the Skoda Epiq and the Cupra Raval.
First previewed back in late 2023, we’ve been given a glimpse of the new ID. 2X that shows it would have ultra-short overhangs and large prominent wheelarches.
The ID. 2X is hotly tipped to share front and rear styling with the ID.2, while beneath the skin the small SUV should come with either a 38kWh or 58kWh battery.
With the bigger of the two batteries, the new zero-emission T-Cross replacement should cover more than 450km on a single charge.
DC charging will be likely pegged at around 125kW while a 10-80 per cent top-up should take less than 30 minutes.

While Volkswagen has declared its ID.2 will be priced from around €25,000 ($41,000), it’s thought the new higher-riding small SUV will still have a price tag well below $50,000 if it is to stand a chance in Australia against cut-price SUVs from new-entrants like Geely, Leapmotor as well as the expected BYD Atto 2.
Despite being confirmed for Australia, there’s still no word on when the ID. 2 hatch will land Down Under.
But it’s not coinciding with the European 2025 launch, so don’t expect the Polo-sized EV until at least late 2026, at the earliest. Which means the ID. 2X – or whatever it is called – will arrive later again.
