MG EV sedan teased: New competition for the Tesla Model 3, BYD Seal, Kia EV4 and Mazda 6e
Competition in the all-electric sedan segment is about to heat up with the arrival of a new MG sedan that appears set to blend Porsche Taycan-inspired styling with the Chinese brand’s latest technology.
Teased for the first time in China (pictured top, courtesy CarNewsChina), no name has yet been officially confirmed for SAIC’s alternative to the Tesla Model 3, BYD Seal brand new Kia EV4 and incoming Mazda 6e.
One possibility is MG7, which is already applied to similarly-shaped ICE sedan already sold in Australia.

Looking more like a sleek four-door coupe than a traditional three-box sedan, and clearly mirroring elements of the Taycan’s styling, the MG’s wind-cheating shape also echoes the Xiaomi SU7.
Its smooth body is likely to help deliver a driving range that could exceed 800km in versions fitted with the largest battery, at least on China’s CLTC test cycle.
MG has not released any technical details of the electric sedan, but if it makes its way to Australia it is widely expected to share much of its underpinnings with the MG IM5 sedan, while being priced considerably lower than the $57,000 before on-road costs asked for that more premium four-door.

Helping it to challenge more expensive European rivals, top variants of the IM5 produce up to 572kW, enabling a startling 0-100km/h sprint in just 2.74 seconds.
Equipped with the largest 100kWh battery, the lightest rear-wheel drive 300kW version of the IM5 can travel up to 755km on the lenient NEDC test cycle.
Charging performance is another highlight of the IM5, with peak rates of up to 396kW and, when connected to an ultra-rapid DC charger, a 30 to 80 per cent top-up taking as little as 15.2 minutes.
The IM5 is based on a heavily upgraded 800-volt version of the platform related to that used by the MG4 hatch, and in China the Volkswagen Group has already launched a rebadged version of the IM5 wearing the AUDI E5 nameplate.
Cost considerations could see the large 100kWh battery omitted from this smaller MG sedan, but it is thought the high-voltage 800-volt architecture could carry over to ensure the more affordable four-door remains competitive with fast-charging rivals.
