2026 BYD Atto 2 to become Australia’s cheapest electric SUV: $35,000 start price expected, undercutting the Leapmotor B10, Chery E5 and MG S5

The 2026 BYD Atto 2 SUV is set to become Australia’s cheapest electric SUV when sales kick off from mid-November.

The Atto 2 will be part of a double-pronged EV pricing attack as the $25,000 – or under – BYD Atto 1 electric city will be in dealers at the same time. Check out our review and video drive here:

The Atto 2 is designed to sit above the BYD Dolphin ($29,990 plus on-roads) but below the Atto 3 ($39,990). The base Atto 2 Dynamic is set to undercut the inbound 2026 Leapmotor B10 ($38,990 drive-away) and become Australia’s cheapest all-electric SUV with pricing pegged at around $35,000 plus on-roads.

As well as the Leapmotor B10, the new BYD is set to slip under the $36,990 plus on-roads charged for the Chery E5 and the MG S5 ($40,490 drive-away).

As well as undercutting other EVs, the new Atto 2 will also be more affordable than many small combustion-powered SUVs that include the likes of the new Mitsubishi ASX ($37,740) and the Subaru Crosstrek ($35,990).

A more expensive BYD Atto 2 Premium will be priced at around $40,000. Official pricing and full specification will be released next month.

When it lands, the Atto 2 will come with just one powertrain, a single electric motor that produces 130kW and 290Nm of torque which provides a 0-100km/h dash of just 7.9 seconds.

Combined with a 51.3kWh battery, BYD says the Atto 2 comes with a 345km range on the WLTP test cycle.

Plug it in and the battery can be topped up at a lowly 82kW max, with a 10-80 per cent battery refill taking a lengthy 38.6 minutes.

Equipped with vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, the new Atto 2 rides on 16-inch alloy wheels and comes with keyless entry and go, faux leather seats, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a rotating 10.1-inch infotainment system.

Measuring in at 4310mm long, 1830mm wide and 1675mm tall with a 2620mm wheelbase, BYD says the Atto 2 comes with 380-litres of luggage space, that expands to 1320L with the second row stowed.
