EV record buster: Next-gen Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door smashes multiple endurance benchmarks, exposes latest Benz EV tech
Mercedes-AMG has set a new range record for EVs and we’re happy to report that unlike some tojer recent electric record attempts it wasn’t how far its wild 2026 Mercedes-AMG GT XX concept can cover on a single charge at 30km/h.
Instead, the German performance division’s new prototype for its next Porsche Taycan-rivalling AMG GT super sedan drove an incredible 5479km in just 24 hours, with most of the driving recorded at an astonishing 300km/h.
If that stat hasn’t blown you away, Mercedes-AMG didn’t stop there.

It continued to drive almost flat out at Italy’s Nardo proving ground until the GT XX had driven 40,075km – the equivalent of a full lap of the Earth’s equator.
And it only took seven days, 13 hours, 24 minutes and 0.7 seconds.

In total, the AMG GT XX Concept broke 25 long distance records, including the 3961km range record set by the new XPeng P7 earlier this month, plus the 3717km drive in a full day that was set by a Mercedes CLA in November.
The XX’s world record was achieved by a team of 17 professional drivers including Mercedes-AMG F1 ace George Russell.
The endurance drive was part of extreme shakedown tests for the Mercedes-AMG’s next-generation axial flux e-motors and new 114kWh cylindrical cell oil-cooled battery tech developed with the Mercedes-AMG F1 team.

Engineers were keen to see how flat-out driving and repeated high-speed charging at up to 900kW would take their toll.
Balancing efficiency with a high-top speed needed to clock such a huge mileage, the test drivers were instructed that 300km/h was the ideal cruising velocity.
Including the stops, that translated to an exceedingly quick 228km/h average speed.
For the record – and to gather twice as much data – two AMG GT XX took part with both crossing the line after seven-and-a-half days of the driving marathon finishing just 25km apart.

Even with a comfortable 1500km margin in its pocket, AMG said high track temperatures of around 35C (in the shade) hampered the team’s efforts and both cars could have driven even further in more favourable conditions.
“An AMG has always been defined by its drivetrain. In the electric world, too, our drive system must be convincing across the board,” said Michael Schiebe, Mercedes-AMG’s chairman.
“That’s why we’re the first manufacturer to use axial flux motors and directly cooled batteries in fully electric models. We have now impressively demonstrated how superior these technologies are.”
There’s no word yet when the 2026 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door EV will be unwrapped but it could arrive before the end of the year.

The record involving the prototype suggests its powertrain could be the finished article, including its incredible ability to charge at up to 900kW.
Engineers involved in the test were also keen to stress the 300km/h limit for the record is far from representative of the advanced AMG’s top speed.
The suggestion is the four-door hyper sedan might be capable of hitting 360km/h when sales begin next year.
