If at this moment you’re a bit confused that’s understandable. After all, the Chery Omoda 5 was a compact SUV the Chinese brand launched back into Australia with a couple of years ago.
But since then it’s decided to break Omoda out into a separate brand, as well as bring the Jaecoo brand to Australia.

Along the way the compact Chery Omoda 5 has been renamed the Chery C5 (ICE) and E5 (EV).
It means Chery Australia now sells new vehicles in Australia under the mainstream Chery, youthful Omoda and premium Jaecoo badges.
Under the separate skins the vehicles will share plenty of tech.
The Omoda 9 is on-sale from next month, priced from $61,990 plus on roads. It blends as much as 395kW peak power with an impressive EV range of up to 169km on the NEDC test cycle.

Helping deliver those impressive figures, is a tri-motor plug-in hybrid powertrain centred around the Chery Group’s 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine.
Against the clock, the 395kW mid-size SUV can launch from 0-100km/h in a claimed 4.9 seconds.
Brim the tank full of fuel and charge the 34kWh battery and Omoda says the 9 SUV has an impressive total range of up to 1100km.

Meanwhile, the battery is capable of being fast DC charged at up to 70kW, allowing for a 25-minute top-up from 30-80 per cent.
More good news is the sole Virtue trim includes automatic parking, a 360-degree camera, in-built dashcam, eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated steering wheel, dual 12.3-inch displays, heated and ventilated seats in both rows.
There’s also a 14 speaker Sony sound system, sat-nav, smartphone mirroring, a head-up display, wireless phone charging, ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate and 20-inch alloy wheels.
Safety is covered off by eight airbags, autonomous emergency braking, emergency lane keeping, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning.

Just four colours will be available – Silk White, Ink Black, Dove Grey, Shadow Grey – while the new Omoda range is protected by an impressive eight-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty (battery included) and eight years roadside assist.
Even though its price makes it look expensive beside the smaller MG HS Super Hybrid Essence ($55,990 drive-away) and the similar-sized BYD Premium 6 PHEV ($52,990 plus on-roads), the huge levels of extra performance on tap, plus its better EV range compared to the 160kW MG (120km EV range) and, even the 238kW Sealion 6 (92km) means the new Omoda 9 has strong arguments in its favour.
