Back to the future: Skoda Favorit EV concept could become a Tesla Model 3 rival

Czech brand Skoda has pulled the drapes off its all-new Skoda Favorit that looks to the car-maker’s past to help inspire the brand’s future.

Created in-house under the supervision of Skoda designer Ljudmil Slavov, the new concept reimagines the small Skoda Favorit hatch made between 1987-1994 as an all-electric hatch.

While other car brand’s, like Renault, have introduced cars like the reborn R5 and R4 E-Tech, Skoda has ruled out a retro revival of its Favorit.

Instead, Skoda is pitching the Favorit as a concept that could influence future models such as an EV Octavia medium passenger car.

Applying its latest Modern Solid design language that was most recently used on the Elroq small SUV, the new concept mimics headlamps, rear C-pillars and simple lines but upsizes the proportions to a Hyundai Ioniq 5-like SUV.

Missing from the Favorit is the firm’s trademark Tech-Deck Face, with the latest Skoda concept adopting a wedging snout.

Other familiar styling cues shared with the original is the concept’s rear door and rear tailgate’s rear window.

Differences are a floating roof, a set of massive concave alloy wheels, rear-hinged doors and illuminated door handles.

As well as the new road-going Favorit EV, Skoda also released pictures of a wilder motorsport version that pays tribute to the little hatchback’s big multiple victories in the World Rally Championship, that included a class win at the 1993 Monte Carlo Rally.

The first Favorit was penned by Italian stylist Bertone and the small hatch’s arrival became a pivotal chapter in the Czech brand’s history as it helped supercharge export sales, attracting the interest and subsequent purchase by the Volkswagen Group.

While the latest concept is expected to be powered by a dual-motor powertrain with upwards of 250kW, the first-gen hatch came equipped with a tiny 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine that mustered just 46kW.

Helping it breakthrough in markets like the UK, the Favorit hatch was attractive, surprisingly high-quality offering at an irresistible price.
