Cheapest electrified seven-seat 2025 Mazda CX-80 aimed at families, but it’s also the one model without the PHEV

The electrified 2025 Mazda CX-80 has been priced from a family-friendly $54,950 (before on-road costs) – $5600 less than the most affordable version of the smaller two-row CX-60 SUV.

Mazda hasn’t quite explained why the longer Mazda CX-80 is cheaper since both cars sit on the same Mazda Large Architecture, but at least part of the cost discrepancy is due to the bigger SUV alone being available in the lower-grade Pure trim trim.

Trouble is the Pure’s the only CX-80 without the choice of a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

And it’s worth mentioning that despite undercutting the CX-60, the latest CX-80 still costs $12,000 more than the cheapest run-out version of the popular and now defunct CX-8 and is $7000 more expensive compared to the old flagship, the CX-9.

So it’s not exactly a bargain.

However, unlike the old CX-8 and CX-9, the CX-80 does at least come with some form of electrification for all powertrains.

Three engines are on offer – the G40e that uses a 209kW/450Nm turbocharged mild hybrid 3.3-litre inline six-cylinder petrol, a more efficient D50e that gets a 187kW/550Nm mild hybrid 3.3-litre turbo-diesel inline six-cylinder and, finally, the most advanced P50e that employs a plug-in hybrid 2.5-litre four-cylinder that features an electric motor and lithium-ion battery and produces 341kW and 500Nm of torque.

While the G40e can average 8.4L/100km, the D50e returns 5.2L/100km and the plug-in P50e claims an average 2.7L/100km.

In Australia the CX-80 is available with the Pure as a G40e while in Touring, GT and Azami it offers all three engine choices. All-wheel drive is standard across the range.

Measuring up at 4990mm long, the CX-80 is 250mm longer than the CX-60 and rides on a longer 2120mm wheelbase for more cabin room.

Meanwhile, just to add confusion Mazda also offers the wide body five-seat CX-70 and seven-seat CX-90 in Australia. They only come with mild hybrid powertrains because Mazda can’t free up PHEV supply for Australia yet.

Australia is the only market where CX-60, 70, 80 and 90 co-exist. The 60 and 80 are intended for Japan and Europe, while the 70 and 90 are focussed on North America.

Big demand for the PHEV CX-70 and 90 in North America help explain why it hasn’t made it to Australia yet.

While it’s the entry-level model, equipment levels are decent for the CX-80 Pure, which gets 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7.0-inch part-digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, black cloth seats and a long list of driver-assist tech.

Choose the Evolve trim and you get a wireless phone charger, an electric tailgate, synthetic leather seats, a 360-degree camera, driver monitoring camera and front traffic alert.

The Touring bags black leather electric seats and second-row sunshades.

The CX-80 GT, meanwhile, upsizes the alloys to 20-inch rims, a larger infotainment screen, premium Bose sound system, a panoramic roof, heated seats and adaptive LED lights.

Finally, the Azami gets Nappa leather ventilated seats, a 360-degree camera and stop and go adaptive cruise control.

If you regularly shuttle around a pair of VIPs the $5000 SP pack is a must-have as it throws in second-row ventilated captain chairs making it a six-seater. It also adds tan leather, a two-tone steering wheel and a suede finish for the dash.
