XPeng’s Australian future unclear as court action initiated and receivers get involved

Chinese electric vehicle brand XPeng faces uncertainty in Australia after its local distributor appointed receivers and launched legal action against the car-maker, according to reports from Drive and WhichCar.

Both outlets report that Sydney-based distributor TrueEV has been placed into external administration, with insolvency specialists appointed to sell existing XPeng G6 stock.

WhichCar said the move follows financial difficulties at the company, while Drive reported the situation has escalated into a legal dispute between the distributor and XPeng itself.

According to the reports, receivers have taken control of close to 200 vehicles held across multiple locations in Australia, including Melbourne, Brisbane, Wollongong and Fremantle.

Drive said the appointment appears to have been triggered by a lender stepping in after financing arrangements tied to vehicle stock were not met.

The dispute between TrueEV and XPeng is understood to centre on their commercial relationship, with Drive reporting court action has been initiated, raising questions about the future structure of the brand’s operations locally.

WhichCar also highlighted concerns around continuity for customers and the broader rollout of XPeng vehicles in Australia.

The development comes at a critical time for XPeng’s local ambitions.

The Chinese brand only launched in Australia in 2024 with the G6 electric SUV and had outlined plans to expand its line-up with additional models including the X9 people mover and G9 large SUV through 2026.

While neither XPeng nor the administrators have detailed what the administration process means for existing customers or future deliveries, the situation is expected to have implications for the brand’s dealer network, servicing arrangements and planned expansion in the Australian EV market.
