XPeng M03 and P7+ electric sedans confirmed for Melbourne motor show: But which one will go on-sale in Australia?

Emerging Chinese star XPeng will display both a Mona M03 medium hatchback and P7+ large family sedan at the Melbourne motor show as it assesses whether to sell either or both in Australia.

The Mona M03 is a Tesla Model 3 rival that has already proved a hit in China, with almost 50,000 sales in its first four months on-sale.

The P7+ is a full-size sedan that Xpeng claimed received more than 30,000 orders during the day of its Chinese launch last November.

A left-hand drive example of the M03 has just landed in Australia for evaluation and will be the car on display in Melbourne on April 5-6. It will make its Australian public debut at the Everything Electric show in Sydney March 7-9.

XPeng’s local distributor TrueEV has pencilled in a late 2026/early 2027 launch in Australia for the M03 and/or P7+.

They have been pushed back from earlier launch dates because TrueEV will have its hands full rolling out the large X9 people-mover, and family G7 SUV and luxury G9 SUVs in 2026.

In 2025, it is focussed on developing its debut G6 medium SUV range and growing its dealer network.

The G6 has already attracted strong interest as a Tesla Model Y fighter with high-tech, strong equipment and lower prices.

The Melbourne motor show will be part of a multi-faceted decision-making process on M03 and P7+, TrueEV CEO Jason Clarke told EV Central.

“You can sit in them, kick some tyres and slam some doors,” he said.

“That is how we are really going about things. We look at the potential models, bring them in, drive them around, evaluate them, do some studies with consumer groups to gauge demand and appetite, show them off at the shows and put pressure on head office.”

Part of the debate for TrueEV with these two models is how heavily it wants to invest in the passenger car segment.

While the Tesla Model 3 is a success story, the overall slump in the sedan segment has been enormous, with SUVs and dual cab utes now dominating the Australian sales race.

“I see the P7+ and the Mona and that sedan shape and I love it personally,” said Clarke.

“But it’s not what Australiana have been attracted to in the last 10 years or so.

“I think we have got to make sure we have the research and the stats to back it up.

“We have to make sure the demand is there no matter how beautiful, fantastic and well-priced it [an XPeng sedan] is.”

In China the Mona M03 comes with a choice of 51.8kWh and 62.2kWh battery packs and 140kW and 160kW front-mounted e-motors. The CLTC claimed range is up to 620km. The M03 is 4.78m long. Its pricing starts from 119,800 yuan ($26,500 approx).

In Chinese spec the 5.056m P7+ comes with a choice of 60.7kWh and 76.3kWh batteries and 180kW or 230kW rear-mounted e-motors. The CLTC range is claimed to be as high as 710km and as low as 602km. Its starting price in China is 186,000 yuan ($41,000 approx).

Clarke said it was most likely – but not guaranteed – that one or the other model would be chosen to enter XPeng into the passenger car segment. However, he did not rule out bringing both.

“P7+ is performance and it is a serious piece of sedan. It’s specs are crazy whereas the Mona is much more price conscious.

“They may work together with different customer demand for that.

“But we’ll definitely have a sedan in the range.”
