Volkswagen ID. Cross electric SUV breaks cover: Critical affordable EV just months from launch
A lightly camouflaged Volkswagen ID. Cross has been spotted testing on public roads in Amsterdam ahead of the small electric SUV’s European launch, due in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The ID. Cross will sit alongside the ID. Polo hatch in the brand’s entry-level EV line-up. Pricing in Europe is expected to start from around €28,000 (approximately $45,000).
Based on the Volkswagen Group’s updated MEB+ platform, the ID. Cross is expected to be offered with a front-mounted electric motor producing 85kW, 99kW or up to 155kW in higher-spec variants.

A more powerful 166kW motor, as anticipated for the ID. Polo GTI, could also be introduced later.

Two battery options are expected: a 37kWh entry-level pack and a larger 52kWh unit, with the latter targeting a driving range of up to around 450km on the European WLTP cycle.
Charging speeds are expected to reach up to 90kW for the smaller battery and approximately 105kW for the larger pack.
In terms of dimensions, the ID. Cross measures about 4153mm in length, 1794mm in width and 1581mm in height, with a 2601mm wheelbase.

Boot capacity is quoted at 475 litres with the rear seats in place, expanding to around 1340 litres with the second row folded. A small front storage compartment of approximately 22 litres is also expected.
Higher-grade variants are likely to offer up to 20-inch alloy wheels, while towing capacity is expected to be rated at up to 1200kg.
Interior details have yet to be officially revealed, but the ID. Cross is expected to share its digital interface with the ID. Polo, including a 10.25-inch instrument display and a 13-inch central infotainment screen.

Volkswagen is also targeting an improved cabin finish compared with current entry-level rivals, with the use of higher-grade materials and sustainable components, including recycled plastics.
The MEB+ platform will also underpin updated driver assistance systems, including the latest version of Volkswagen’s Travel Assist adaptive cruise control, with features such as automated lane changes and traffic sign recognition.
Production of the ID. Cross is set to take place in Martorell, Spain, alongside the ID. Polo and the closely related Cupra Raval, with all three models developed in parallel.

Following their launch, Volkswagen’s small EV range is expected to expand further with the addition of the ID.1 hatch, as well as additional SUVs and sedans for global markets, including China.
