Used EVs: February 2025 sales are up, but there are headwinds
Second-hand EV sales are growing in early 2025 And unlike the new EV market, the growth is year-on-year as well as month-on-month.
And where the Tesal Model Y rules the new-EV sales roost even in its currently diminished state, it’s the Tesla Model 3 that is most on demand.
In fact, the Model Y isn’t even the second most popular used EV, it’s third behind the MG4.

All up, according to figures compiled by AutoGrab and published with the Australian Automotive Dealers Association (AADA), there were 2137 used EVs sold in February.
That’s a climb of 11.4 per cent from the 1918 sold in January.
And in February 2024, 1232 used EVs were sold in Australia, so year-on-year that’s a climb of 73.4 per cent.In Januray 2024, the tally was 1150.
New EV sales were up 48.2 per cent month-on-month from January to February 2025, but down significantly year-on-year.
However, there were a lot of used EVs left without new owners in February 2025, with 6136 offered for sale.

This didn’t help retained values, which were lower for EVs year-by-year than for the passenger, SUV and ute segments.
After three years an EV retained on average 66.8 per cent of its value, while the three mainstream overall segments were all running at over 80 per cent.
“Sales of used EVs experienced a significant increase of 11.4 per cent, but we’d be cautious to read too much into this given the immaturity of the used EV market and the very low volumes in which they sell relative to ICE vehicles,” said AADA CEO James Voortman.
“One of the reasons we may be seeing increased appetite for used EVs is the good value for money of the vehicles which have experienced rapid depreciation.

“There also a growing range of demonstrator EVs on the used car market due to strong supply of new vehicles”
“While sales of used EVs have increased, the number of EVs for sale is almost three times the number that sold in February, but there are signs that the market for used EV and PHEVs is starting to develop.”
