Tesla’s worst nightmare? Meet the new XPeng G6, the more talented – and cheaper – alternative to a Model Y

The 2025 XPeng G6 electric mid-size electric SUV will arrive late this month priced from $54,800, undercutting the cheapest Tesla Model Y by $1100.

The flagship G9 Long Range will arrive priced from $59,800 (plus on-roads), but if you order now first customer deliveries won’t begin until the end of this year.

XPeng says as standard both G6 models will arrive with a five-year/120,000km warranty, plus an eight-year/160,000km battery warranty, with the options to extend both by a further five and two years respectively for an undisclosed cost.

Taking care of servicing during its lifetime will be independent servicing chain Ultra Tune, calling on its network of 275 service centres nationwide with technicians trained up to work on the new G6.

Sharing a footprint with the Tesla Model Y, the G6 is just 3mm longer, 1mm wider and 26mm taller, with an identical wheelbase, plus a 571-litre boot capacity.

When it comes to powertrains, the G6 Standard Range gets a 190kW/440Nm rear electric motor that’s combined with a 66kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack that provides for a 435km driving range on the WLTP test cycle.

Performance, meanwhile, is impressive, with 0-100km/h taking just 6.6 seconds. Those figures are 0.3sec quicker than the Tesla Model Y, but the new rival has a 20km shorter range.

The G6 Long Range gets a more powerful e-motor that produces 210kW and 440Nm of torque, plus a larger 87.5kWh battery that uses nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry, that sees it deliver a 570km range and a 6.2sec 0-100km/h dash.

Next year, a much-quicker 350kW G6 Performance will arrive that will offer all-wheel drive and a 0-100km/h sprint of around 4.0 seconds.

When it comes to charging, the G6 Standard Range can be topped up at up to 215kW with a 10-80 percent top up taking just 20 minutes for both versions, as the Long Range can suck up electrons at up to 280kW.

Both G6 variants come with loads of standard kit that includes adaptive LED headlamps, large 20-inch alloy wheels, a 15-inch infotainment that works with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster.

Ventilated and heated synthetic leather seats, a panoramic glass roof, dual-zone climate control and an 18-speaker sound system, plus plenty of driver assist aids.

Incentivising early adopters, if you order before October 31 2024 the Chinese brand will throw in a free domestic wall-box.

Announcing its first showroom will open near Sydney Airport, XPeng says more locations will open around the country in time.
