Tesla teases three new models, including the Model 2 small car and Model Q compact SUV
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has teased three all-new inbound models at its company annual shareholders meeting, including the long-awaited entry-EV.
During his presentation, Musk showed off a slide that was said to depict Tesla’s entire future product plans, including three mystery models pictured under shrouds.
From left-to-right, the first model in the line-up is said to be the Tesla Model 2 small car, while the second towards the car on the far right is thought to be the Model Q compact SUV.
On the bottom row is potentially a new delivery van that could also spin-off an EV people-mover.
“Obviously we’ve got some new products that we’re working on, under the covers, and I think these are going to be pretty special,” Musk said.
“I think people may think ‘oh it’s not going to be that amazing’, but just wait… it will be.”
Just two months ago reports on several newswires suggested the cheap Tesla Model 2 had been shelved. But it appears those reports were either false, or the project has been restarted. It’s not known if the US brand is still on-track to deliver the Model 2 by late 2025.
Little information surrounds either the Model Q or new delivery van but it’s been reported both with be made using “revolutionary manufacturing technology” that will allow for a circa-$35,000 starting price in markets like Australia.
Both the Model 2 and Model Q have been scheduled to be produced at Giga Texas before being expanded to China, where Tesla hopes to ramp up its annual production to more than 5 million cars.
Once moved to China it’s almost certain both the Model 2 and Model Q will be destined to be sold in Australia, allowing the US brand to finally compete at the lower sub-$50,000 end of the EV market – a space currently dominated by Chinese brands.
