Seventh heaven? Hot new Volkswagen ID.7 GTX unleashed as VW chases down the Tesla Model 3 Performance
VW’s flagship family sedan and wagon will soon be available as a hotter 2025 Volkswagen ID7 GTX that will boast both more power and a longer range thanks to an overhauled powertrain.
Following on from the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.Buzz that are already available with the GTX badge in other markets, the new Volkswagen ID.7 GTX adopts a dual-motor powertrain that produces 250kW – 40kW more than the previous range-topping ID.7 Pro.
As well as more power there’s a bigger 86kWh battery (up from the Pro’s 77kWh) that can now be DC charged at up to 200kW, which means a 10-80 per cent top up now takes less than 30 minutes.

Against the clock, the big sedan can now launch from 0-100km/h in a brisk 5.4 seconds and top out at 180km/h. Those figures are some way off the Tesla Model 3 Performance, which is claimed to hit the same 100km/h benchmark in just 3.1 seconds.
Instead of combining two equally sized motors the ID.7 GTX is drive by a powerful 210kW rear permanent-magnet synchronous motor, while at the front there’s a smaller asynchronous 80kW drive unit that can decouple for better efficiency on the highway.
Improving charging times there’s a pre-condition battery function that heats the power pack to optimum temperatures to ensure the 86kWh battery can accept the maximum charge immediately.
The full WLTP range for the ID.7 GTX has not been released for either body style but the is expected to be less than the Pro S version that can cover up to 709km in sedan guise on smaller wheels than the 20-inch wheels the ID.7 GTX rides on (21s are an option).
Said to have a tweaked chassis to reflect its sportier character, the ID.7 GTX also gets a specific steering tune, plus the option of Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) adaptive dampers.
Differentiating itself from other ID.7s, the GTX gets a different front bumper, LED arrowhead daytime running lamps and black gloss trim.
Inside, there’s a pair of sport seats that feature red stitching and GTX lettering. Ahead of the driver there’s a small digital instrument cluster while a larger infotainment touchscreen that’s mounted in the centre of the dash.
New tech includes an augmented-reality head-up display that now also integrates both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the infotainment now incorporates a voice assistant that uses ChatGPT. There’s also a 700-watt Harmon Kardon sound system.
Volkswagen Australia is yet to confirm when it will launch the ID.7. GTX
