New Fisker Ocean is the electric SUV with a trick up its sleeve
The new Fisker Ocean is the electric SUV with a trick up its sleeve, with the EV brand’s production-ready model displaying some super clever tech and a surprisingly affordable sticker price.
Just revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Fisker Ocean does appear to be the electric vehicle the brand needs now, tapping into one the world’s most popular vehicle segments and offering a range that should leave any anxiety in the rear-view mirror.
To be offered in three trim levels, the Fisker will be sold as the Ocean (from US$37,499), the AWD Ocean Ultra (from US$49,999), and the AWD Ocean Extreme (from US$68,999), though the first 5000 vehicles made (in Austria, by the way) will be a special Launch Edition that matches the price of the most expensive trim level.
Those prices, when converted to Aussie dollars, seem competitive, with the range kicking off at around $51,000. For that, Fisker is promising a 400km range from the FWD Ocean, thanks to the on-board lithium-ion phosphate battery pack.
Step up the AWD Ultra, and your range increases to 547km, while the Extreme delivers 563km, with those models equipped with something called a “Hyper Range” battery pack which features a nickel manganese cobalt cell chemistry that was developed by Fisker and CATL to be what the brand calls “segment leading.”
Full details are yet to confirmed, but we do know the Fisker Ocean will produce 205kW and a run to 60mph (about 96km/h) in 6.9 seconds. The Ultra ups the power to 400kW, clipping 60mph in 3.9 seconds, while the Extreme delivers 410kW and a 3.6 second sprint.
The SUV’s other trick is a clever “Revolve” infotainment screen, which doesn’t just stretch a massive 17.1inches, but can also spin from portrait mode (when on the move), to landscape mode (when parked and you want to watch a TV or a movie).
Production is still 12 months away, with the brand targeting November 2022 for the factory to begin firing up.
