New electric Geely EX5 is most affordable Tesla Model Y alternative yet with pricing kicking off at just $43,490 plus on-roads, undercutting the Deepal S07 and Leapmotor C10

Pricing of the 2025 Geely EX5 has been leaked revealing the new Chinese mid-size SUV will become Australia’s most affordable mid-size battery-electric SUV when it lands in dealers this March.

Kicking off at $43,490 plus on-road costs for the entry Complete trim, the EX5 slips comfortably beneath the Deepal S07 (from $53,900 plus on-roads), with the EX5’s closest rival becoming the Leapmotor C10 that is pegged at $45,888 (plus ORCs).

The BYD Atto 3 Essential ($39,990 plus ORCs) is cheaper, but a much smaller vehicle.

Even the top-spec Geely EX5 Inspire trim is set to cost just $47,490 plus on-roads, with both models comfortably priced well below the electric mid-size SUV genre-defining Tesla Model Y that now costs an eye-watering $63,400 for the facelifted Launch Edition – although cheaper versions will follow.

As well as stealing sales from other EV makers, the Geely EX5 is also tipped to encroach into the space inhabited by popular hybrid SUVs like the Hyundai Tucson ($45,100) and best-selling Toyota RAV4 Hybrid ($42,260).

Measuring in at 4615mm long, 1901mm wide and standing 1670mm tall, the EX5 has a 2750mm wheelbase and is smaller than the refreshed Model Y.

The Geely 175mm shorter, 19mm narrower but 46mm taller than the global best-seller.

Boot space is only 302 litres but expands to a more generous 1877L with the rear seats dropped.

Just one powertrain is offered with the EX5 – a single e-motor that musters 160kW and 320Nm of torque that drives the front wheels only.

Combined with a 60.2kWH lithium iron phosphate battery (LFP), the base EX5 Complete can cover up to a WLTP-verified 430km on a single charge, with the range falling to 410km for the plusher Inspire variant.

Charging is up to 100kW, with a 30 to 80 per cent DC top-up said to take 20 minutes.

From launch both versions will offer a vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability to charge appliances on the go.

Despite its attractive low pricing, specification is high on the base Geely EX5, with the Complete bagging LED lamps, pop-out door handles, rear privacy glass, heated front seats, a wireless phone charger and six-speaker sound system.

Within, there’s also a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 15.4-inch infotainment that comes with satnav but misses out on both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Driver assist tech includes autonomous emergency braking, a 360-degree camera, traffic sign information, blind-spot monitor and driver fatigue detection.

Spend $4000 more for the EX5 Inspire and you add a panoramic roof, powered tailgate, front parking sensors, a 13.4-inch head-up display, ventilated seats, plus a more powerful 16-speaker sound system.

Enticing a rush of early buyers, Geely says it will kick in three-year’s-worth of free servicing for buyers who order before February 28.

Owners will also score a year’s free public fast-charging with Evie, capped at 1000kWh.

The standard colour is white, while buyers will be charged extra for black, silver or green paint.
