Most advanced EV tech yet? Mercedes-AMG’s new super-SUV that’s set to take down the new Porsche Cayenne EV and Lotus Eletre

The first image of the inbound Mercedes-AMG super-SUV has dropped, with the mega EV to introduce the high-performance brand’s new dedicated AMG.EA architecture, advanced new e-motors and state-of-the-art battery tech when it arrives in 2026.

Created to rival the latest Lotus Eletre, the petrol-electric BMW XM and the next-generation Porsche Cayenne EV, the headline news is the AMG super-SUV has been developed from the ground up by AMG and is not spun-off any production Mercedes-Benz.

Look at the single outline of the AMG super-SUV and that explains why it looks nothing like the current EQS SUV, and has more rakish Ferrari Purosangue-style shape.

When it arrives, there will also be plenty of design cues lifted from the low-slung 2022 Vision AMG concept, and that’s because it’s being developed alongside the second-gen Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe that switches to EV power and also sits on the same AMG.EA architecture.

If you’re wondering why AMG didn’t use an off-the-peg platform for both its all-new EVs, AMG.EA has been specifically designed to package the Axial Flux disc-shaped e-motors that were pioneered by British engineering firm Yasa – that AMG subsequently bought.

Weighing just 24kg, the Yasa e-motor produces up to 358kW and 800Nm of torque, with the super SUV and fast four-door coupe set to have four motors. Total power is set to exceed 750kW.

Other advanced tech includes 800-volt electronics and a battery pack developed by AMG that features a silicon anode for far higher levels of charging.

There’s still no word on pricing for the unnamed Mercedes-AMG super-SUV, but it’s expected to sit in the range even above the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 that currently sells for $272,300 (plus ORCs).

There’s no word yet on what character the AMG SUV will offer, but instead of focusing on track work, it’s thought the high-riding EV will combine explosive performance with high levels of luxury, although next-gen chassis tech and four-wheel steer should ensure it will be among the best SUVs to drive.
