Mitsubishi reveals new Outlander SUV; PHEV coming
Mitsubishi has rolled out the new generation Outlander medium SUV ahead of its Australian launch late in 2021.
While no details of the new plug-in hybrid version were announced, we thought you’d still want to get a look at the Outlander’s distinctive styling.

Bigger than its predecessor and intended to be more premium, the fourth-generation Outlander adds more technology and is confirmed with a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (up from 2.4) and upgraded all-wheel drive. It still comes with seven seats.
The PHEV is expected to come with a bigger battery and longer pure EV range.
Currently the Outlander PHEV combines a 2.4-litre petrol four-cylinder with a 60kW front and 70kW electric motor and 13.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The electric range is 54km.
That same drivetrain is being used in the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV that is due in 2021.
Speculation for the new Outlander has so far focused on the new model getting a version of the 2.5-litre engine, 20kWh battery pack and 70km electrified running.
We’ll report those PHEV details when Mitsubishi reveals them.
New tech offered in the new Outlander includes a large horizontal infotainment touch-screen, a digital instrument cluster and wireless smartphone charging.
Under the skin the Outlander rides on a new platform shared with the latest Nissan X-Trail, which “greatly improves collision safety performance and achieves a high level of steering stability. Adopting connected cyclic structures around the engine compartment and cabin increased flexural and torsional rigidity of the body over that of the previous model”.
Mitsubishi says the design concept of the all-new Outlander is known as “Bold Stride”. This represents “a bold, adventurous attitude and confidence to move forward”.
Design details include a next-generation Dynamic Shield grille, daytime running lights and turn indicators sitting above the headlights, rear-end styling that is inspired by the Pajero 4×4 and up to 20-inch alloy wheels.
Globally, the total sales volume of the Outlander series has reached 2.6 million units. In Australia, the total sales volume is 167,575.
