MG4 backs away from battle with BYD Dolphin and GWM Ora to be Australia’s cheapest EV with price rises that sees up to $3000 added to electric hatch

Prices for the 2025 MG4 will rise again next month with the cheapest MG4 Excite 51 set to rise to $37,990 drive-away – $1000 more than it’s priced currently.

The increased price is a world away from late last year when the popular small hatch sold for as little as $30,990 drive-away.

No reasons have been given for the rises, but MG Australia has previously indicated the car would never be sold at $30,990 again – and that steady price rises were on the cards for the MG4.

MG confirmed that there are no specification changes between the MY24 and MY25 MG4.

From July 1, the MG Excite 64 with the bigger battery (the numbers refer to the battery capacity in kilowatt-hours) is now priced from $42,990 drive-away – $2000 more than the MY24 version but the biggest price bump has been reserved for the MG4 Essence 64 that now costs $3000 more at $45,990.

The near-flagship MG4 Essence 77, meanwhile, is $1000 pricier at $50,990.

The only variant escaping the rise is the quickest 320kW MG4 XPower – claimed to take 3.8 seconds to hit 100km/h – that remains priced at $55,990 drive-away.

MG has not yet clarified whether the new pricing will apply to remaining MY24 stock, or whether they will escape the price rises.

It’s thought the launch of the MY25 model could be the last run of the current version of the MG4 before the arrival of the facelifted version lands next year. That updated 2026 model will see tweaks to the cabin and exterior.

MG4
The most affordable MG4 Excite 51 is now $37,990 drive-away, $7000 more than its late 2024 price.

In the first four months of 2025 around 1700 MG4s found homes in 2025, a drop of 6.2 per cent over the same time period in 2024.

While the 2025 MG4 has become more expensive, the 2025 BYD Dolphin line-up has become even more affordable, with the base Dolphin Essential now priced from just $29,990 plus on-road costs, while the flagship Dolphin Premium available from $36,990 (plus ORCs).

The 2025 GWM Ora, meanwhile, is priced from $33,990 drive-away.
