Jaguar doubles down on all-electric future: Rubbishes claims hybrids are on the way

JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) has reaffirmed it remains committed to Jaguar’s switch to an all-electric car maker later this year.

The declaration came in response to a report suggesting the luxury brand is racing behind the scenes to re-engineer its all-new architecture for petrol-electric hybrid power.

Dismissing the report from the British Sunday Times as “rubbish”, a senior source told Autocar that Jaguar remains on track to relaunch as an EV-only brand, as planned.

The newspaper reported that slowing sales of electric cars had triggered a massive rethink at JLR and that the new Jaguar Type 00 four-door GT would be available with both all-electric and a range-extender hybrid powertrain.

However, the latter has now been definitively ruled out for when sales start in the second half of this year.

Speaking to Autocar, a senior spokesperson for JLR said: “Our plans to reinvent Jaguar as an electric-only luxury automotive brand are unchanged.

“Last month, prototype passenger rides received overwhelmingly positive reactions from global media and we are looking forward to unveiling the first new electric Jaguar later this year.”

JLR announced the switch to EV power back in late 2024 and began axing its combustion-powered models in early 2025.

It now appears production of the Jaguar Type 00 four-door GT will go ahead as an EV around the third quarter of 2026 and will then be joined by a four-door sedan and a large SUV, as the luxury brand reshapes itself as a high-tech, zero-emissions rival to Bentley.
