Jaecoo J5 EV Aussie details confirmed: Single dog-friendly ‘Track’ variant headed our way

Chinese newcomer Jaecoo has confirmed its new J5 electric compact SUV will arrive in Australian showrooms in January 2026, launching initially with a single, highly specified variant known as Track.

Pricing has not yet been announced, however Jaecoo is expected to position the J5 EV competitively in the fast-growing small electric SUV segment, with likely rivals including the BYD Atto 2, Leapmotor B10, Kia EV3 and MG S5 EV.

That would mean pricing potentially in the $30K bracket.

The J5 EV is a front-wheel-drive battery-electric model powered by a single electric motor producing 155kW and 288Nm.

Jaecoo claims a 0–100km/h time of 7.7 seconds, while energy consumption is quoted at 14.3kWh/100km.

Driving range is rated at up to 402km on the WLTP cycle. DC fast charging capability allows a 30 to 80 per cent recharge in as little as 28 minutes, while vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality is also included, enabling the J5 to power external devices.

Jaecoo says the Track variant will feature 18-inch aero-style alloy wheels with Continental tyres, a power tailgate, glass roof with powered sunshade, dual-zone climate control and acoustic glass for the front doors.

Interior highlights include heated and ventilated front seats trimmed in a silicone-based synthetic leather designed to be antibacterial and easier to clean, a feature Jaecoo is promoting as pet-friendly.

“No other vehicle currently offers a pet-friendly interior and a large selection of accessories, which range from a dog carrier to a waterproof cargo mat, and even a karaoke machine,” said Roy Munoz, Chief Commercial Officer Omoda Jaecoo Aus & NZ.

Technology is centred around an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch central touchscreen, supporting wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, intelligent voice control and a 50W wireless phone charger.

An eight-speaker audio system and 360-degree surround-view camera are also standard.

Externally, the J5 EV adopts a boxy compact SUV design with EV-specific front styling, active aero elements, slimline LED headlights and a full-width rear light bar incorporating Jaecoo branding.

Safety equipment includes seven airbags and a suite of driver assistance systems such as autonomous emergency braking, emergency lane keeping, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning.

Like other Jaecoo models sold locally, the J5 EV will be backed by an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty, eight years of capped-price servicing and an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre battery warranty.

More details, including pricing, will be announced in coming weeks. Hybrid and ICE Jaecoo J5 models are also expected to come to Australia.

Interesting car. I hope they do a better job at tuning the ride and handling for Australian conditions. The Jaecoo 7 hybrid was widely criticised for its poor ride quality on bumpy Australian roads.
