How much!? Stretched Tesla Model Y on sale with razor sharp price to up the fight to Hyundai, BYD, Kia, Zeekr

The Tesla Model Y L is priced from $74,900 plus on-road costs, representing a $6000 price premium over the regular Model Y Long Range with which it shares much of its equipment.

The new six-seater variant – which incorporates two luxury-focused captain’s chairs in the middle and a third row with two additional seats – also picks up more equipment.

Officially called the Model Y L Premium All-Wheel Drive – Telsa has adopted the “Premium” moniker across its Model 3 and Model Y ranges – the newcomer gets power operation for all three rows.

All six seats are also heated, while the front and second-row seats also get ventilation.

The Model Y L is the first Tesla with vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability.

Using an adaptor connected to the charging port – rather than a powerpoint integrated into the cabin, as is common with rivals – the Model Y L can supply up to 3.3kW of power to run appliances or charge another electric vehicle.

The Model Y L also introduces a new colour, Cosmic Silver, which like Ultra Red is another $2600.

It’s also available in Diamond Black and Glacier Blue ($1500 each) as well as Stealth Grey ($1900). Pearl White Multi-Coat is the only standard colour.

It’s not available with the white interior trim with Tesla instead introducing a new interior trim option known as Zen Grey, for $1500 (it’s very close to white!).

The Model Y L isn’t simply a lightly tweaked version of the existing SUV.

Tesla has stretched the platform by 150mm between the front and rear wheels, increasing the wheelbase to 3040mm and overall length to 4969mm.

The larger body accommodates a longer NMC lithium-ion battery pack, lifting the official WLTP driving range to 681km.

It’s all about the seats: The Tesla Model Y L gets six heated and electrically adjustable seats, with luxurious centre row captain’s chairs.

That’s a useful 81km improvement over the regular Model Y Long Range, which is rated at 600km WLTP.

Performance remains familiar, with the same dual-motor all-wheel-drive set-up producing 378kW and 590Nm.

The larger body and battery adds a small penalty to acceleration due to the additional 96kg.

The Model Y L is claimed to take 5.0 seconds for the benchmark 0-100km/h sprint, 0.2 seconds slower than the shorter Long Range variant.

Charging capability mirrors the rest of the Model Y line-up.

The new L supports 11kW AC charging and up to 250kW DC fast charging, enabling a 10-80 per cent top-up in roughly 25-30 minutes on a suitable fast charger; the maximum DC charge rate is 250kW.

Like other Teslas, it also benefits from access to the brand’s extensive Supercharger network.

Safety has also been expanded to accommodate the extra seating. Rather than extending the curtain airbags further back, Tesla has introduced dedicated third-row side head airbags designed specifically to protect occupants in the rearmost seats.

The Model Y L carries a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Externally, the stretched SUV looks familiar but gains subtle tweaks, including a unique tailgate design with a lower-mounted central brake light integrated into the spoiler and 19-inch wheels with staggered tyre width: 255mm at the front and 275mm at the rear.

Inside, the cabin continues Tesla’s minimalist approach. A 16-inch central touchscreen controls most vehicle functions, while second-row passengers get their own 8-inch display. As with other Teslas, there’s no conventional instrument cluster, with the speedo and key driving data displayed on the right-hand side of the main screen.

Standard equipment includes matrix LED high beams, a heated steering wheel, convincing faux-leather trim and a panoramic glass roof.

Deliveries of the Tesla Model Y L are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026.

It’s covered by Tesla’s recently updated five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty (which reduces to five years/150,000km for Uber drivers and other commercial users).

The high voltage battery is covered by a separate eight-year, 192,000km warranty.
