Full details: 2025 Alfa Romeo Junior previewed ahead of Aussie touchdown to tackle EV3 and BYD Atto 3

Fresh details have surfaced in the build-up to the new 2025 Alfa Romeo Junior’ that will launch here in the third quarter of this year as both a mild-hybrid tech and EV.

Built to replace both the MiTo and Giulietta hatchbacks, the new small SUV in electric form will rival the inbound VW ID.3, Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia EV3 and the Jeep Avenger that shares the same platform, tech and powertrains and is even built at the same Stellantis factory in Poland.

Introduced as the new entry-point in Alfa’s line-up, pricing will be announced closer to its arrival Down Under but it’s been tipped cars with the Ibrida power (petrol-electric hybrid) will be positioned significantly below the Tonale small SUV that is priced from $50,900 (before on-road costs).

Measuring in at just 4170mm long, 1780mm wide and standing 1500mm tall the new Alfa Junior is a considerable 360mm shorter than the Tonale.

The Alfa Junior Ibrida combines a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol with a small 21kW electric motor, a small battery, plus a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

In total, the cheapest Junior produces 100kW of power and 230Nm of torque, which is enough for a 0-100km/h time of 8.9 seconds and a 206km/h top speed while claiming 4.1L/100km (NEDC) efficiency.

Despite coming with a smaller battery than a conventional hybrid, the Junior Ibrida is said to be able to drive in all-electric mode during parking and at low speeds, boosting efficiency in town.

The all-electric Junior Elettrica, meanwhile, comes with a 115kW front-mounted electric motor that is powered by a 54kWh battery that is said to be capable of seeing the small Alfa travel more than 407km between charges on the WLTP test cycle.

Capable of being topped up at a DC rate of 100kW, Alfa Romeo says that up to 100km of range can be added in just 10 minutes, with a 10-80 per cent charge taking around 30 minutes.

Off the line, Alfa Romeo says the small SUV takes 9.0 seconds for the 0-100km/h dash.

From launch the Junior Ibrida and Junior Elettrica come in just one equipment grade with only front-wheel drive offered.

Equipment levels are high, with all Juniors we get coming with matrix LED headlamps, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a second 10.25-inch screen for the infotainment that offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and comes with Alfa’s Connected Services and a Connected Navigation.

Level 2 autonomous driving aids are also included with the baby Alfa getting autonomous emergency braking (AEB) that can detect both cyclists and pedestrians, adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist, blind spot detection, fatigue detection and auto high-beam.

Both the EV and mild-hybrid Junior get half-fake heated leather seats that includes a massage function for the driver, ambient lighting and aluminium pedals. A leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, rear USB ports and height-adjustable cargo floor is all included.

Externally, the Junior sports a set of 19-inch alloy wheels, a gloss black body kit, a two-tone black roof, LED tail lamps and rear privacy glass.

Distinguishing the Ibrida from the Elettrica, the petrol-fed small SUV gets dual tailpipes, while the EV adds an 11kW onboard AC charger.

There’s no word yet on whether Alfa Romeo Australia plans to introduce the all-wheel drive Ibrida Q4 later that features a second 21kW e-motor driving the rear axle that raises power to 108kW.

It’s also hoped the fast 209kW all-electric Veloce might later join the ranks. It has been created to rival the Mini Cooper E and the Alpine A290.

It’s claimed to take just 5.9 seconds for 0-100km/h sprint and gets a sporty chassis and a limited-slip differential.

Sticking with the same 54kWh battery, the hot SUV can travel up to 410km on a charge.

Alfa Romeo hopes the arrival of the Junior will turn around its fortunes in Australia following a bleak 2024 that saw deliveries drop by 21.6 per cent to just 561 cars, despite the arrival of the Tonale.
