Ford Mustang Mach-E on sale in Australia Q4
The Ford Mustang Mach-E has finally been confirmed for Australia – and its performance will trounce any of the muscle car V8s the brand has sold here previously.
Ford has confirmed a three-model lineup for the electric SUV that will include a regular Mustang Mach-E, a longer range single-motor version and a dual-motor Mustang Mach-E GT.
First deliveries will begin in Q4 of 2023.

“It’s an exciting time for electric vehicles in Australia, and Mach-E gives us the chance to do what Mustang has done best for decades – put a smile on customer’s faces, said Ford Australia president and CEO Andrew Birkic. “We know Australians love that feeling of driving a performance car, and the Mach-E will mean they can enjoy that iconic Mustang freedom with all the benefits that an EV offers.”
The Mach-E – which has nothing in common with a Mustang muscle car other than its name – will compete with the Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and upcoming Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra.
As with those rivals, it will come with a generous spread of standard gear that includes a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. There’s also a 15.5-inch central infotainment screen – arranged in a portrait configuration – that is half an inch bigger than that in the Tesla Model Y.
The Mach-E will be offered in three model grades: entry-level Select, mid-grade Premium and flagship GT.
The Select is powered by a 198kW/430Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels. It’s hooked up to a 71kWh battery expected to provide about 470km of WLTP range.
The Premium gets the same single electric motor driving the rear wheels. But a larger 91kWh battery ups the outputs to 216kW and 430Nm while extending the range to about 600km.
The Mustang Mach-E GT gets a second electric motor to create an all-wheel drive systems. Its peak outputs are 358kW and 860Nm and it’s claimed to hit 100km/h in 3.7 seconds. The EV range will be about 490km.
The Mach-E GT also gets MagneRide suspension that adjusts the damping as well as an Untame mode designed for race track use; it allows more sliding and is designed to maximise pace.
Ford is not talking pricing for now, instead telling us that will be announced closer to the Mach-E’s on-sale date.
But its overseas positioning suggests it will start at around $75,000 – which is right in the heartland of the electric SUVs currently dominating the market. However, that would put it on the fringe of the federal government’s FBT exemption and see it miss out on the rebates and incentives offered by most states and territories.
The Mustang Mach-E GT will likely be well over $100,000.
Ford will begin taking online and dealer orders for the Mach-E within weeks before first arrivals in the fourth quarter of 2023.
