First look! The 2028 BMW M3 EV is coming with a hypercar-crushing 750kW quad-motor powertrain
BMW M has dropped the first official teaser of its all-new M3 EV and promised it will “set new standards” in the super sedan class when it launches in 2028 with huge power courtesy of a quad-motor powertrain.
All-new from the ground up, the next BMW M3 EV will be based on the equally fresh ‘Neue Klasse’ (new class) 3 Series that’ll sit on an entirely new platform which has been tailor-made for electric cars.
The new image of the test mules suggest the M3 will get the usual wide arch treatment and sport an oversized front bonnet that feature extra vents and openings to jet cool air to the big brakes which lurk behind large lightweight rims.

But there is one more big significant change compared to BMW Vision Neue Klasse concept revealed at the 2023 Munich motor show that previewed the all-new 3 Series due to break cover in late 2025.
While that vehicle gets single- or dual-motor powertrain, the M3 will come with four e-motors.
The powertrain has already been extensively tested in a heavily modified i4 prototype that shares the same camouflage as the latest M3.
But the BMW super sedan is thought to pack a major evolution of that car’s powertrain.
Despite showing off the almost finished item, BMW M will let us stew a little longer before it releases full details.
But insiders have already revealed the next M3 EV will come with a monstrous 746kW (1000hp) power output and advanced torque vectoring that should guarantee nimble handling and an ability to drift for Bavaria.
Expect BMW M to continue to release teasers in the coming months in the build-up to the next-gen 2028 BMW M3’s debut, which could include the unveiling of a new concept version as soon as next year.
To satisfy owners not ready for the switch to EV, BMW M has already confirmed the next BMW M3 will continue to be available with the option of a combustion engine, with the suggestion the current car will undergo a major refresh – that could include more hybrid electrification.
If you’re wondering about the non-M Neue Klasse BMWs, the first of its next-generation EVs to arrive next year will be the 2025 BMW iX3, followed by the 2026 BMW 3 Series.
