Exotic Polestar 6 roadster delayed as focus turns to Polestar 7 SUV for 2027

Polestar is shuffling its future model plans as it looks to boost sales and take advantage of increasing interest in electric SUVs.

The Swedish-based Chinese-owned brand has prioritised the upcoming Polestar 7 over the sexier – and much more expensive – Polestar 6 in the interest of growing sales for the fledgling brand.

The Polestar 7 is expected to bring high levels of luxury and performance in an effort to tackle brands such as Porsche and Range Rover with a pint-sized electric SUV.

And it turns out the Polestar 2 – the car that launched the brand Down Under – will get its own replacement after all, keeping the five-door sportback spirit motoring for a while yet (but possibly with a new name).

Originally, it was thought the Sino-Swedish brand’s second model would be superseded by the Polestar 7 but following comments from CEO Michael Lohscheller to Autocar, the new Polestar 2 will have its own sequel that should arrive around 2027.

The Polestar 7, meanwhile, will be a larger SUV designed to sit above the Polestar 4 and rival premium electric SUVs such as the latest Porsche Macan EV.

Introduced after the 7 in 2026 will be the limited-run Polestar 6 roadster, the battery-electric droptop that’s set to share a lightweight aluminium platform with the 2025 Polestar 5 that arrives this year.

In 2027 the Polestar 2 sequel will rock up, with the entry model set to be the first car based on the car-maker’s scalable single architecture that will underpin all future models.

The Polestar 6 has been pushed back to prioritise the upcoming Polestar 7 compact electric SUV.

Once introduced the Polestar line-up will include the 2 replacement (five-door sportback), Polestar 4 (mid-sized SUV), 7 (compact-to-mid-size SUV), 5 (four-door coupe), 6 (low-volume roadster) and the flagship Polestar 3 (large five-seat SUV).

Just to add some extra confusion, the Polestar 2 is almost certain to be renamed the Polestar 8, which would be consistent with the firm’s naming strategy of labelling them in numerical order as they arrive.

First introduced back in 2020 and arriving in Australia in 2022, the Polestar 2 was both the first all-electric car from the Geely-owned car maker and originally started life as a Volvo concept based on the Volvo XC40.

Since its introduction five years ago more than 160,000 Polestar 2s have found homes globally.
