EVERY1’s a winner: 2027 Volkswagen ID. EVERY1 previews the cheap, chic baby EV built to beat the BYD Dolphin, MG4 and GWM Ora

Volkswagen has unwrapped a close-to-production concept version of the all-new 2027 Volkswagen ID. EVERY1 that will be priced from less than €20,000 ($34,000) when it goes on sale in two years’ time.

The long-awaited replacement for the popular petrol-powered VW Up, that was sold briefly in Australia (2011-2014), the new Volkswagen ID. EVERY1 is primed to be the German car giant’s most affordable all-electric car yet.

Developed side-by-side with the bigger VW Polo-sized Volkswagen ID.2all that goes on sale next year priced from €25,000 ($43,000), the ID. EVERY1 sits on a modified version of the Volkswagen Group front-wheel drive MEB Entry platform.

Compared to its larger sibling, the ID. EVERY1 gets a shorter wheelbase, a smaller less energy-dense battery and a less sophisticated rear axle that’s been nicked from the current Polo.

Driven by a new more efficient electric motor that produces around 70kW, the ID. EVERY1 has a top speed limited to 130km/h.

Combined with a new battery with an undisclosed size or chemistry, the new ID. EVERY1 will cover up to 250km on a single charge.

Fresh tech adopted by the ID. EVERY1 includes an advanced new software architecture that has been developed with help of US EV ute – and SUV-maker –  Rivian.

Picking up where the blocky Volkswagen Up’s left off, the designers of the new ID. EVERY1 is believed to match the production car.

Elements like the “slightly cheeky” smiling bumper and human eye-aping head- and tail lights are set to carry over.

Both front and rear lamps come with animated hello and goodbye sequences, while other design elements include surprisingly large 19-inch alloy wheels and illuminated front and rear badges.

When it comes to its size, the ID. EVERY1 measures up at 3800mm long, 1816mm wide and 1490mm tall, making it around 280mm shorter than a Polo but a significant 250mm longer than the Up it supersedes.

Despite its tiny dimensions there’s a decent 305 litre boot which is just 45L less than the Polo.

Most of the materials used in the cabin are recycled while the “terrazo-like mottled surface” is claimed to provide a light and modern look.

Despite its bargain price, the little ID. EVERY1 still gets a slim horizontal digital instrument cluster that is combined with a larger central touchscreen.

Importantly, the screens are accompanied by a row of physical shortcut buttons for the volume, and temperature control.

The welcome return of physical buttons includes the new two-spoke steering wheel that mercifully misses out on the capacitive buttons used on previous VW EVs, like the ID.3.

Other handy cabin innovations include a rail to mount a tablet or a shelf ahead of the passenger, plus a centre console that can slide rearwards with yet more shelves that can be pulled out.

A removable Bluetooth speaker between the two front seats is also handy for picnics, while all seats, bar the driver’s, can also be folded flat to make a bed to sleep while charging.

“The ID. Every1 is the last piece of the puzzle on our journey to having the widest model selection in the volume segment. We will then offer every customer the right car with the right drive system – including affordable entry-level all-electric mobility,” said Volkswagen boss, Thomas Schäfer.

Unconfirmed for Australia, when it arrives the production version of the Volkswagen ID. EVERY1 will rival EVs like the BYD Dolphin, GWM Ora and the MG4.

Unlike the original Volkswagen Up, early reports suggest that, for now at least, there will not be a replacement for the Skoda Citigo or SEAT Mii that were all originally spun-off the VW city car.

The ID. EVERY1 is just one of nine new VW models that includes the bigger ID. 2all. The next EV scheduled to be unwrapped will be the ID.2 X SUV at September’s Munich motor show.

Seems a bit under powered with the 70kw motor? And only 250km of range? If not arriving for another 2 years these specs seem a little underwhelming?
