Cupra reveals Leon and Formentor plug-in prices
Cupra’s plug-in hybrid Leon VZe hatchback will cost from $62,990 drive-away and Formentor VZe mid-size SUV from $63,990 drive-away when Australian order books open this June.
Cupra, for reference, is a sub-brand of Volkswagen Group’s Spanish subsidiary Seat. The aim is to position Cupra in a sub-premium space with performance and driver appeal at its core.
The brand launches here in June with its Leon, Formentor and Ateca SUV, with only the latter not available as a PHEV. The Cupra Born full EV won’t arrive at launch, but is set to go on sale here in late 2022.
Prices vary by location
The VW Golf-size Cupra Leon VZe has an RRP of $59,900. Drive-away prices vary on location. It will cost $62,990 in ACT; $63,990 in QLD; $64,990 in NSW and SA; $65,490 in VIC and $65,990 in WA. On-the-road pricing for TAS and NT are yet to be announced.
The plug-in hybrid Cupra Formentor VZe medium SUV has an RRP of $60,990. Drive-away prices are $63,990 in ACT; $64,990 in QLD; $65,990 in NSW and SA; $66,490 in VIC and $66,990 in WA. No word on TAS and NT on-roads yet.
Both the plug-in VZe’s use the same 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol. It combines with an 85kW/300Nm electric motor to give a decent 180kW and 400Nm. Mated to a six-speed DSG auto, the 0-100km/h time takes a claimed 6.7 seconds the Leon and 7.0 seconds the Formentor.
The shared hybrid system uses a 12.8kWh battery, offering a claimed 55-60km electric range in the Leon and 52-55km the Formentor.
Typical of PHEVs, charging is by AC only and the peak power each accepts is 3.6kW. A wallbox would have each from zero to full in 3 hours and 20 minutes, while a domestic powerpoint would do the job in five hours.
Generous standard kit
Standard equipment on the Leon VZe includes 19-inch alloys, LED lights, 10.25-inch digital cockpit, navigation, wireless phone charging, wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, paddle shifters, cloth bucket seats, dynamic chassis control, tri-zone climate and a solid active safety suite.
Formentor specification basically mirrors that of the Leon. The full list of inclusions are listed below.
All Cupras include a five-year, unlimited kilometre warranty. As a sweetener there’s also complimentary three-year servicing.
As has become typical of new brands entering our market, Cupras will have non-negotiable fixed pricing. We’re no wiser about how and where Cupras will be sold. You can register your interest on its website, but where its promised ‘outlets’ will be located and how customers can test drive or collect bought cars hasn’t been confirmed.
We do know servicing and after-sales support will be looked after by some of the existing network of 180-plus Audi, Volkswagen and Skoda dealers.

Well where does that leave the cupra born price wise? It was supposed to be an affordable ev but surely can’t be priced cheaper than the $62k Leon hybrid.
Hi Rodders – it’s a good point, but if we look to Cupra’s pricing in the UK (RHD market) where the Leon hybrid and Born EV are on sale, it’s the Born EV that’s cheaper. The Leon e-Hybrid is £36,710, or in high-spec (similar to the Australian specification) it’s £40.064. The Born EV is £34,660 in the UK. We’ll have to see what spec they bring it to Australia with, but it being cheaper than the $62k Leon Hybrid looks likely…
