BYD Atto 3 – what we know so far

New Chinese EV player BYD revealed its Atto 3 electric SUV at a glitzy bash in Sydney this evening, at the same time revealing some key information about the equal cheapest EV on sale in Australia.

Here’s what we know so far from EVDirect.com.au, BYD’s Australian importer.

The headline price of the Atto 3 is from $44,990 drive-away, but that’s only in Tasmania. It’s over $47,000 in NSW and Victoria due to higher on-road costs for example, but these states do offer some financial rebates to lower that sum. Go to the bottom of this story for full state-by-state pricing around Australia.

UPDATE: BYD swaps to dealership sales in Australia

An extended range variant is $3000 extra; both are available to order through the EVDirect website now.

First estimated delivery dates are July 2022.

A long seven-year/unlimited km warranty is promised, matching the likes of MG and Kia in Australia. The battery warranty is for seven years / 160,000km.

The model able to be ordered on the website, the Atto 3 Superior, is front-wheel drive and the single motor offers 150kW and 310Nm. The 0-100km/h time is 7.3 seconds.

Using WLTP figures, the five-seater Atto 3 has a range of 310Km in Standard guise, and 420km as an Extended Range model. Battery capacity is 50.1kWh and 60.4kWh respectively.

There are AC (Type 2) and DC (CCS 2) charging ports with 3 phase charging capability, plus a 220V ’emergency’ charging cable.

Using an 80kW fast charger, BYD claims an “approximate 90 minute charge time” – but doesn’t say from and to what battery percentage. Using a standard home powerpoint would take about 22 hours to charge the Standard model while the Extended Range would be closer to 27 hours.

Standard inclusions are 18-inch alloy wheels, 12.8-inch rotating touch screen, 5-inch digital instrument panel, wireless phone charging, power ‘leather styled’ front seats, electric panoramic sunroof, Dirac sound system (but no mention of Apple CarPlay/Android Auto) and auto tailgate.

Available colours are white (free), grey (an extra $700) or blue (extra $700).

Size-wise, the 60/40 split-fold rear seats offer 1330L of boot space when the rears are down – there’s no mention of the boot size with all seats in place.

Price of Atto 3 in QLD? Plus when will Han and Seal be available?

We’ve just added state-by-state pricing to the bottomn of the article.
As for the Han and Seal, not sure… but we’ll hopefully have an update soon. The car known as EA1 or Dolphin will be renamed Atto 2 for Australia and is due here in December 2022. And EVdirect Australia boss Luke Todd says there will be an additional five BYDs here by the end of 2023; the Han will be one of the them and likely the Seal too.

don’t forget that Vic buyers need to pay the additional $2.50/100km EV road tax to VicRoads.
Cant let us pesky first adopters catch a break!
Coming to a state near you soon no doubt…….
I feel sorry for the owners of PHEVS, paying for 95 ron fuel as well as $2.00/100km EV road tax.

Does anyone know if the regenerative braking takes you to fully stopped? So is it one-pedal driving?

There are no right-hand drive cars in the country. But when they arrive (presumably closer to the planned July 2022 arrival) they the best bet is to check on the EVdirect website. They’ll also be conducting test drives as selected MyCar outlets (the former Kmart Tyre and Auto).
