BMW i4 range trimmed in Australia: Popular LCT-busting eDrive35 updated, but more expensive models follow ICE 4 Series out the door

The BMW i4 EV range in Australia is being refocused on its most popular model, an updated version of the eDrive35.

Due for introduction before the end of 2025, the new BMW i4 eDrive35 will continue to be priced under the Luxury Car Tax threshold at $88,900 plus on-road costs, a rise of $1100.

This ensures it continues to qualify for the fringe benefit tax exemption if being purchased via a novated lease, an initiative that has aided its popularity as well as that of a number of other BMW EVs in Australia.

However, the two more expensive models in the current i4 range, the i4 eDrive40 and flagship i4 M50 are being dropped from the local range.

This a further rationalisation of BMW’s medium passenger car line-up, as the equivalent 4 Series Gran Coupe ICE models were axed in late 2024.

Examine the sales and it’s easy to see why the focus is now solely on the eDrive35.

Total i4 sales in Australia to the end of September 2025 – since introduction in early 2022 – add up to 3340. The eDrive 35 has accounted for 2523 of them despite only being introduced in late 2023.

The key technical change to the updated i4 eDrive35 is a new silicon carbide semiconductor components in the power electronics that reduces consumption by 4.5 per cent and extends the claimed ADR range from 430km to 448km.

Other technical features are unchanged, including a 66.4kWh (net) high-voltage battery and rear-mounted current-excited synchronous electric motor. Power and torque figures remain at 210kW and 400Nm, with the standard 0-100km/h sprint achieved in six seconds.

Equipment has been boosted with an M Sport Package and glass sunroof now standard.

Key highlights of the M Sport Package include variant-specific front apron, side skirts, rear bumper and diffuser element and 18-inch M light alloy wheels.

Other styling tweaks include a new BMW kidney grille with a diamond textured surface and new headlights featuring vertical structures for the daytime running lights and turn signal indicators.

Inside, there’s a new flat-bottomed M leather steering wheel with a 12 o’clock marker and seat heating for driver and front passenger.

There is also a new operating concept for the ventilation and climate control functions and tyre pressure monitoring is now standard.

All metallic paints adds $2000 (only white is standard) and optional alloy wheels cost an additional $2100.
