Beat that Bugatti! 1000kW 2026 Mercedes-AMG GT XX concept is a wild EV hyper-sedan with 360+km/h top speed

Mercedes-AMG’s all-new Porsche Taycan Turbo GT hunter is one step closer following the unwrapping ceremony of the unhinged 1000+kW 2026 Mercedes-AMG GT XX.

Drawing plenty of inspiration from the Vision One-Eleven hypercar EV concept, including borrowing its copper-orange beam paint, Mercedes-AMG’s first ever electric car is reported to come equipped with three electric motors that produce more than 1000kW for a top speed in excess of 360km/h.

Equipped with AMG’s next-generation EV tech, the Mercedes-AMG GT XX is expected to be capable of receiving a charge of up to 850kW using an ultrafast DC charger, with as much as 400km range added in just five minutes.

Those figures are tantalisingly close to the time it takes to top up a petrol car.

The link with combustion cars continues as Mercedes-AMG says thanks to a synthesised driving audio system the Mercedes-AMG GT XX sounds like one on the move.

Using up to eight speakers, including some embedded in its headlamps, the fast four-door EV can broadcast the sound of the brand’s iconic V8 soundtrack.

Looking more like a four-door supercar than any of its rivals, the AMG GT XX is a mash-up of both the aforementioned Vision One-eleven and the 2022 Vision AMG Concept, blending curves with rakish fastback styling.

Missing in action is a rear windscreen, with a digital display providing the rear vision.

But the new AMG does come with fancy Ferrari-style six circular taillights that are interlinked by a ULED light bar with 700 individual LEDs that can communicate messages.

Up front, there’s an unusual grille that looks lifted from the V8-powered AMG GT coupe and is paired with two slimline vertically stacked headlamps.

The look is more Maserati than Benz, but within, the AMG GT XX once again channels a supercar with a yoke steering wheel that appears borrowed from the ONE hypercar.

Combining a large digital instrument cluster with a big landscape-mounted infotainment system, both are placed behind a single piece of glass for a slick look.

The first pics also show off door strap pulls, instead of handles that hint at extreme levels of weight-saving.

A biotech material, meanwhile, provides a leather alternative that is twice as strong but doesn’t heat up as quickly in the sun, with a man-made silk alternative using the same tech replicating a spider’s silk.

Beneath the skin, the AMG GT XX will be the first car to be based on Mercedes-AMG’s own AMG.EA electric architecture that has been developed from scratch.

Other architectures available from Benz were ignored because they cannot package AMG’s next-gen Axial Flux disc-shaped e-motors that will power the halo four-door coupe.

Weighing just 24kg each, the Yasa-designed e-motors produces up to 358kW and 800Nm of torque.

Since it produces more than 1000kW, the Mercedes-AMG GT XX easily overshadows the 815kW that is pumped out by the mightiest Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and should be a couple of tenths quicker to 100km/h, with a predicted sprint of less than 2.0 seconds.

Meanwhile 0-200km/h will take an outrageous 5.0 seconds.

The impossibly high 360km/h top speed overtakes both the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT’s 305km/h and the Tesla Model S Plaid, which top outs at 320km/h.

Other advanced tech includes 800-volt electronics, and a battery pack developed in-house featuring a silicon anode and a high-performance battery that can support an 850kW DC fast charge.

In Europe, there are no chargers currently capable of delivering such high rates.

But AMG says it is working with Italian-based EV charger manufacturer Alpitronic, on a device capable of delivering up to 850kW via a standard CCS connector.

Built to be an eventual successor to the combustion and plug-in hybrid versions of the AMG GR 4-Door, the AMG GT XX concept measures 5204mm long, 2130mm wide and stands 1317mm tall.

That’s a considerable 156mm longer, 61mm wider and 136mm lower than AMG’s current V8-powered sedan.

No range figures have been released but thanks to its aggressive styling, AMG claims an ultra-low 0.198 drag coefficient.

Other innovations include new electroluminescent paint technology that sees the car glow at night or when slowing. When plugged in the body can also tell the owner the charging progress is underway.

The in-built external headlamp speakers, meanwhile, warn pedestrians at low speeds of the big AMG’s approach.

Despite showcasing some of the new tech that will debut on the real 2026 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door EV, media reports insist the battery-electric super-sedan will have significantly toned-down styling when the real car makes its debut next year.
