Are the tough times over? Polestar sales on the up in Australia as Polestar 4 makes an impact

Has Polestar turned a corner in the right direction in Australia?

While the Sino-Swedish electric vehicle specialist isn’t dominating Aussie EV sales, it’s growth off a low base has been significant in 2025.

Year to date to the end of June Polestar has sold 1173 EVs in Australia compared to 949 in the first six months of 2024.

The arrival of the Polestar 4 SUV has played a key role in that 23.6 per cent year on year sales growth.

It wasn’t that long ago the future of the brands was not only looking fragile in Australia but globally as well.

And there are still negatives as well as positives, with sales of the staple Polestar 2 foundation model well down despite pricing now starting at $57,000 drive-away.

But Polestar Australia managing director Scott Maynard was upbeat when questioned about the brand’s performance.

“The new model launches are now really kicking in. Polestar 4 has found its feet and is doing really nicely in the market. We’ve done some good stuff with Polestar 3 and introduced a couple of programs that have boosted that.

“And also the retail network that we’ve rolled out, which has allowed us to get to more locations and get a better representational footprint, seems to be working well for us as well. Drawing on the experience that those retail groups bring to us has helped.

“The brand sort of gets to a critical mass. We’re now talking to people that say, ‘I’ve seen a 4, it looks amazing, I want to talk more about that’. So that’s all sort of rolled up to give us some good growth this year.”

Polestar’s model expansion will continue with the Polestar 5 luxury saloon in early 2026, but it’s the Polestar 7 compact SUV not due until 2028 that will offer the next big kick in local and sales.

“The car’s going to be important, because anything that’s SUV sells well in Australia,” said Maynard. “So it’s a great car for us.

“So we’re excited to be able to bring a compact SUV to Australia, and it’ll be properly premium as well. So it’s the right car for our market. We’re really excited to get it.

“You would expect that a compact SUV in a market like ours will represent volume to us, for sure, yes.

“There’s still a lot of details to be bolted down, so it will come to where it sits price-wise and what its level of spec and equipment is. But I would expect a car of that size and the way it’s being set up at the moment would bring us a great lift in volume.”

Globally, Maynard pointed to improved Polestar financial results in quarter one driven by a 76 per cent sales increase, improved profit margins on vehicle sales and the roll-out of new global CEO Michael Lohscheller’s forward plan for the brand.

Maynard attributed the 58.27 per cent drop in Polestar 2 sales year-on-year from 949 to 396 to the arrival of the Polestar 4. The medium luxury SUV – which launched last November – has claimed 676 sales in 2025.

“We’re actually seeing some Polestar 2 customers move to 4,” said Maynard. “They wanted something a little bit more SUV, a little bit more size to it, and so it’s 4. I’m actually really happy with the job that 2’s doing in the face of 4’s launch.”

The downturn in Polestar 2 sales was obvious in June, where overall brand monthly sales dipped behind 2024. This was because a big fleet order for the 2 was filled in June 2024.

Polestar is offering pre-configured 2025 Polestar 3 long range dual motor with Plus and Pilot packs and premium paint for $119,000 out to September 30. The list price is $132,720 plus on-road costs.

Launched in Australia last September, the 3 has sold 101 examples in the first six months of 2025.

“Polestar 3 is that upper-tier car and it’s sitting in a much heavier price bracket and still needs a little bit more brand establishment for people to understand exactly what that car is and the position it occupies,” said Maynard.

“And so we’re just doing everything we can to try and encourage that.

“We’re still discussing what’s going to pop out in quarter three [in terms of Polestar 3 price structure and offers]. It’s likely to change … as we roll off the end of end of financial year, it’s likely that we’ll change the offer that we’ve got running at the moment.”

Maynard also confirmed a continued expansion of the dealer network, with work currently going on in Canberra and northern Tasmania with other outlets to be finalised.

“There’s a couple of other spots that we’re now starting to look to and talk to to see us grow the network a little bit further during the rest of the year,” he confirmed.
