All-new MG S6 SUV exposed: European crash test reveals China’s latest Tesla Model Y fighter

Safety authority EuroNCAP has unwittingly given us our first look at the all-new 2026 MG S6 SUV ahead of the Tesla Model Y rival’s expected official debut later this year.

Pictures released of the all-electric mid-size SUV following its crash testing reveal the larger sibling of the current MG S5 mimics its smaller sibling’s smooth styling and split lower air dam.

It also comes with a pair of slim arrow-shaped LED headlamps that sit above triangular-shaped light binnacles.

At the rear, the new S6 SUV appears to mimic the Mercedes EQA’s interlinked rear lighting, while the bumper incorporates what looks like a large faux diffuser.

Inside, the crash test pics reveal the MG S6 will come with a squared-off steering wheel, large centrally mounted infotainment and a big head-up display.

The pictures suggest the S6 will remain a five-seater and not come with a third row of seats.

Luckily for the former British-owned Chinese brand the premature reveal hasn’t been a complete disaster, as the MG S6 EV was awarded the full five stars for safety by EuroNCAP, earning 92 per cent for adult protection, 85 per cent for child protection, 84 per cent for vulnerable road users and 78 per cent for its driver assist tech.

Helping it achieve its strong performance, the new MG S6 SUV comes with passenger, side, chest and pelvis airbags, plus a front centre airbag.

The new MG also boasts the brand’s latest-gen lane-keep assist, driver fatigue detection, an intelligent speed limiter and the car-maker’s latest autonomous emergency braking that can detect pedestrians and cyclists.

Set to inhabit the space between the MG S5 (from $40,490 drive-away) and the more expensive IM6 (from $60,990 drive-away), it’s not been announced by MG Motor Australia how much the inbound mid-size SUV will cost.

But beneath the skin it’s expected it will share more with the S5 than the advanced IM6.

Earlier leaks have also confirmed there will be the choice of either a 62.2kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery or a larger 77kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery pack.

Entry variants will also be rear-wheel drive, while the dual-motor all-wheel drive versions should produce around 266kW.

When it arrives, the new S6 SUV will do battle with the dominant Tesla Model Y, the BYD Sealion 7 and Kia EV5.

There’s no word on when the 2026 MG S6 SUV will be revealed, but it’s thought its unveil is only a matter of weeks away, with a launch in some markets before the end of this year.
