Skeleton shifts: 478kW Hyundai RN24 WRC-inspired prototype previews faster and lighter EVs

Hyundai N has unwrapped its wild bare-bones RN24 prototype, previewing an inbound high-performance EV.

The new concept has been described as a rolling lab being used to develop Hyundai’s future tech.

Based on the same E-GMP architecture as the current Ioniq 5 N, the RN24 is 340mm shorter than the much-lauded 5 N EV, but keeps its dual-motor all-wheel powertrain good for 478kW and 770Nm.

Said to feature a WRC-inspired chassis and, like an Ariel Atom, featuring scant bodywork, Hyundai N says the RN24 weighs 1880kg – 355kg lighter than the Ioniq 5 N.

Despite the weight loss, the RN24 matches the SUV’s 0-100km/h dash of 3.4 seconds and 245km/h top speed.

Using an 84kWh battery pack, the RN24 should post a range exceeding the Ioniq 5 N’s 447km.

New tech includes a WRC-devised software system, larger rear wing and faster steering for rally car levels of agility and response.

Engineers have developed a special Rally Mode, simulating the all-wheel drive system and mechanical differentials of the Hyundai’s current i20 N Rally1 racer.

Extra calibrations allow adjustments to throttle sensitivity, brake regen, power balance and more, all through steering wheel controls.

The Ioniq 5 N’s Active Sound+ system carries over and has been upgraded for a more immersive experience, mirroring the sound of a combustion engine.

“This rolling lab is not just a test vehicle; it’s a platform for initiating new conversations about next-generation high-performance EVs,” said Hyundai.

RN24 goodies earmarked to appear on future Hyundai EVs include extra cooling for the motors and battery to allow full power deployment for longer periods of time.

We already know the next Hyundai N electric car will be the Ioniq 6 N, launching in early 2026.

As well as donating some of its tech to the new flagship N car, it’s thought the Korean brand’s high-performance division is readying a smaller, less expensive fast EV to sit below the Ioniq 5 N.

The halo 5 N costs around $111,000 plus on-roads.
