400km recharge in five minutes! BYD hyper-fast 1MW chargers coming to Australia

BYD’s industry-leading one megawatt hyper-fast DC Flash Charger is coming to Australia in 2026 on the direct order of global chairman Wang Chuanfu.

Chuanfu has made it clear he sees Australia as particularly suitable for BYD’s groundbreaking 1000-volt/1000kW DC chargers.

The plan is to instal them at every dealership of the new BYD-owned Denza premium brand, which launches in Australia before the end of 2025.

“Other premium brands … you guys can probably think of, they have Saturday morning coffee and cars, and I’m adding the third C: Coffee, cars and charging,” Denza Australia chief operating officer Mark Harland told EV Central.

Denza has already signed up 15 dealers, with around 25 expected to be in-place by the end of 2026.

They are being asked to reserve the space so the 1MW chargers and supporting battery storage can be installed in 2026.

Harland made it explicitly clear how integral Chuanfu is to this initiative.

“Plans have been set in motion since July on the chairman’s visit (to Australia).

“Our chairman is very passionate about this. And as an engineer who knows infinitely more than I know, he sees an opportunity in this space for Australia.

“And so really, for us, it’s to now work through how quickly we can bring that to market, and which vehicles we’re going to do it.”

The 1MW chargers are capable of adding up to 400km of range in just five minutes – the equivalent of 2km every second.

That rate essentially puts EV recharging on a par with refuelling a petrol vehicle.

DC fast charging in Australia currently tops out at 800V and 350kW-400kW, although charger numbers are limited.

The complication right now is there are no BYD or Denza vehicles sold in Australia that could fully exploit these BYD 1MW chargers.

In fact, BYD has developed both an all-new Super e-Platform vehicle architecture and a fresh lithium-iron-phosphate Blade battery capable of accepting the full 1000kW.

Clearly, Denzas with this new technology are coming to Australia. The first likely candidate is the Denza Z9 GT, which is confirmed with 1MW charging capability.

In fact it will launch in the right-hand drive UK market in the first quarter of 2026, where a similar 1MW charger roll-out for Denza dealers has already been announced.

Denza Australia can also draw from two other BYD subsidiaries – Fangchengbao and YangWang – for its models. None are known to have 1MW capability as yet.

Meanwhile, BYD itself sells two models in China with 1MW recharging, the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV. Neither are confirmed for Australia.

The launch Denza line-up will comprise the Fangchengbao-sourced B5 and B8 plug-in hybrid 4×4 wagons, neither of which have hyper-fast charging capability.

Harland told EV Central Denza EVs would start launching soon.

“Vehicle number three or four will definitely be an EV,” he confirmed. “Part of it is delivering on that sustainability and cooling the earth, by one degree.

“But the other half of that is to deliver on this thousand-kilowatt platform, which we see as a competitive advantage when we can bring that to market.

“Part of that is the vehicle, and we know that BYD Denza has the capability and the batteries. And then the other part of the equation is having the charging infrastructure that can do that.

“And we have solutions for that as well, so we’re not just waiting for the local provider.”

Harland said 1MW charging capability would help separate Denza from other premium brands.

“What other luxury automotive brand produces their own batteries and charging stations?” he asked.

“This is a means of having charging stations, flash charging stations, to provide a broader charging infrastructure to leverage this competitive advantage that we have in rapid charging speeds.”
