2026 MG4X electric SUV revealed: Breakthrough battery tech for BYD Atto 2, Jaecoo J5 and Leapmotor B10 fighter

The first official images of the all-new MG4X SUV have surfaced, previewing MG’s anticipated high-riding sibling to the MG4 hatch.

Built to slot beneath the current MG S5 EV, the MG4X measures 4400mm long, 1800mm wide and 1600mm tall, placing it in the compact electric SUV segment alongside rivals such as the BYD Atto 2 and Leapmotor B10.

The styling marks a shift away from the more dramatic Cyberster-inspired look seen of some recent MG models, instead adopting a cleaner and more mature design language.

The MG4X is the third member of the small EV family, following on from the MG4 hatch and the MG4 Urban, which launches in April in Australia and should be among Australia’s cheapest electric vehicles.

Under the skin, MG says the MG4X will use its latest semi-solid-state battery technology, which combines both solid and liquid electrolytes. The company claims the chemistry improves safety, energy density and performance across a wider range of temperatures.

The first battery pack to feature the technology will have a capacity of 53.95kWh and is claimed to deliver up to 530km of driving range under the CLTC test cycle used in China.

MG also claims the battery can be recharged from 30 to 80 per cent in around 21 minutes.

Images of the interior have not yet been released, but the MG4X is expected to feature the brand’s latest digital architecture developed in partnership with Chinese smartphone maker Oppo.

Reports from China suggest the system will use Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and feature a large central infotainment display measuring around 15.6 inches.

Production of the MG4X is expected to begin in China next month. While MG has yet to confirm Australian timing, the compact SUV is widely tipped to reach local showrooms before the end of 2026.

If it does arrive here, the MG4X could become the brand’s most affordable electric SUV, with overseas reports suggesting a starting price equivalent to around $35,000.

That would place it below the MG S5 EV, currently priced from $40,590 drive-away, and position it against rivals including the BYD Atto 2 and Chery’s Omoda E5.
