2026 Porsche Macan Review: Entry-level rear-drive EV is superb, so why aren’t they selling?

Let me take you back two short years.

The Porsche Macan could be had for $93,800 before on-roads. It had a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol, healthy 195kW/400Nm, and cracking, slick seven-speed auto gearbox. It was also probably (definitely, in my opinion) the best handling and steering medium SUV you could buy.

Then the EV revolution hit Macan.

The new fully electrified second-generation now holds the honour of best-handling and steering electric medium SUV, but there are compromises. Big ones.

For starters, the range now kicks off at $129,800 for this rear-wheel-drive entry-level. That’s a mega $36,000 over the old petrol version. That outgoing combustion Macan may have been showing its age, and the new EV is dramatically more advanced, but its sticker price has ostracised many potential buyers.

The leap from something like a VW Tiguan or Lexus NX into the rarified air of Porsche ownership seemed within grasp before. Now, Macan shopping feels reserved for high-earning elites.

Then there’s the noise. Or lack of it. It’s in no way controversial to suggest your typical Porsche buyer (and Ferrari, and Lamborghini) are in it for some aural theatre, as well as cutting edge tech.

Offering this second-gen Macan with only batteries and electric motors was always going to be challenging. And so it’s proved.

2026 Porsche Macan RWD: From a chunky $129,800.

If we consider the first two months of sales in 2026, Porsche Australia has shifted 97 Macan EVs.

Two months into 2025 it was 541 combustion ones sold, following 572 in 2024.

Porsche’s brave new EV world, like most legacy brands, isn’t rolling as planned, and it’s well reported there’ll be some kind of combustion Macan equivalent making a return in future.

It’s an unfair distraction for the Macan EV, which in isolation, is a superb electric SUV worthy of the Porsche badge, albeit a pricey one.

2026 Porsche Macan price and equipment

There are now five Macan EVs on sale: this Macan RWD ($129,800); Macan 4 AWD ($137,600); Macan 4S AWD ($149,300); Macan GTS AWD ($171,100) and Macan Turbo AWD ($187,600). All before on-roads.

In my state of Queensland, an options-free Macan RWD shows a $143,700 drive-away price. We’re not comparing like-for-like, but I could drive-away two Tesla Model Y LR AWDs for the same coin.

Our Macan is the only in the range to feature a single motor, mounted on the rear axle. All others have a front one too.

The single motor offers 250kW (265kW overboost using launch control) and 563Nm, hits 100km/h in 5.7 seconds and goes on to 220km/h.

There’s a 96kWh (usable) battery giving this Macan the longest range in the line-up at 654km, thanks to a 16.2kWh/100km energy consumption.

It’s not as if you’re gaining much over other Macans. All have the same 96kWh battery, and all boast a 600km+ range.

Home charging a 2026 Porsche Macan RWD.

Maximum charging power is 270kW, and using a 150kW DC charger takes 33 minutes to go from 10 to 80 per cent. That drops to 21 minutes if you can find an ultra-rapid charger.

AC charging at 11kW takes 10 hours to go from empty to full.

The rear-drive Macan weighs 2220kg and has braked towing capacity of 2000kg. There’s a rather small 501L boot (1348L with rear seats folded), but a handy 84L frunk under the bonnet.

Standard inclusions are Matrix LED headlights, 20-inch black alloys, auto tailgate, Sport-Tex leatherette trim, 14-way electric comfort memory and heated front seats, leather multifunction steering wheel with drive mode dial, electric adjust for the steering column, two-zone climate control and ambient lighting. No cooled seats is stingy, especially during a Queensland summer.

Infotainment’s covered by a 12.6-inch curved digital driver display, 10.9-inch HD touchscreen, navigation, Porsche Connect with 10 years subscription, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, digital radio,150 watts Sound Package Plus, two USB-C ports in the front storage compartment (a pain to reach), two more in the rear centre console and a15W wireless phone charger.

Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) gives you active damping as standard, with choice of Normal, Sport, and Offroad drive modes (Sport Plus mode only comes with optional $1540 Sport Chrono Package); and there are 350mm brake rotors front and rear.

It’s steel spring suspension as standard, but an extra $2830 buys adaptive air suspension.

For driver assist, there’s traffic sign recognition, lane change and keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, auto emergency braking, intersection assist, adaptive cruise control, swerve and turn assist, opt-in active speed limit assist, driver monitor, front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree surround view camera.

Porsche has calibrated all of the above exceptionally well, ensuring drives are rarely interrupted with any nannying.

Porsche loves an options list, and our test car was brimming.

Some highlights include $2880 Papaya metallic paint, $3350 leather package upgrade, $7780 22-inch Macan Sport wheels, $3280 exterior colour off-road design package, $3110 panoramic roof, $860 Porsche electric sport sound (don’t bother), $4120 augmented reality head-up display (clever, but not worth that much), $2230 Bose surround sound and $2700 for an extra screen in front of the passenger.

Porsche offers a stingy three-year/unlimited km warranty, eight-year/160,000km battery warranty, and services are every two-years/30,000km.

2026 Porsche Macan RWD: What we think

I won’t beat around the bush. The Macan EV lacks the engagement and character of its petrol-powered predecessor.

Perhaps that won’t matter to you. You just want an electric SUV, and if so, you’re buying a superb, talented work of engineering and style.

If you’re updating from your previous Macan, however, not only are you being stung in the pocket, but you’ll find there’s soul missing here. And that’s something Porsche drivers care about.

Regardless, this Macan is simply beautiful to live with. And having previously tested the Macan 4 and Macan Turbo EV models, this entry-level RWD makes solid sense as there’s an appreciated playfulness that only comes from a rear-drive machine.

It’s no rocketship, but the Macan RWD is zesty enough to keep you on your toes. Rolling acceleration in Sport mode helps it really shift, but you must move up the model range to find anything that’ll pin you to your seat.

If you’re a performance junkie, an extra $20k (not that much when you’re already in for $130k) to buy the 352kW/820Nm Macan 4S with all-wheel-drive and 0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds makes sense.

But I reckon if you can’t find fun in this basic Macan RWD, you’re either not trying hard enough or are on the wrong road.

Find some twisties and this Macan shines with the qualities you expect from the badge – sharp and direct steering, quick response to turn-in and lovely balance and sure-footedness in corners.

The more you push the more it rewards: too cautious and this 2.2-tonne Porsche will safely understeer, but give it a boot-full and some eager steering input and the rear end has a wiggle and slide, and the driver a big grin.

Our tester lacked the optional air suspension, but I never felt it was needed. Despite low-profile 22-inch Bridgestone Potenzas (I don’t want to know the cost of a replacement set), hits were generally well absorbed and the ride cushy, but reassuringly firm.

Some paddles for activating regen would be welcome for a bit more driver engagement. Even when you select regeneration on, it’s very weak indeed. At least this locks in a smooth driving experience, which feels very Porsche SUV.

Speaking of smooth, the Macan’s very much at home on highway or in cities. It’ll take gentle throttle inputs for silky progress, and sound deadening’s good too, even with the skinny tyres.

My test car had been gifted roughly $20,000-worth of interior extras, so it’s hard to judge what a no-option Macan EV’s cabin is like.

But I can report it feels every inch a $130,000 SUV inside. There’s a markedly more modern and cohesive cabin design in these new gen Macan EVs, but the cockpit remains properly driver-centric and you can sit sportscar-like low. Almost.

The layout is no-nonsense with solid (and beautifully knurled) analogue buttons for climate; there’s clear gauges in the 12.6-inch curved instrument cluster and 10.9-inch infotainment in the centre. All your touch points feel classy.

2026 Porsche Macan RWD with optional passenger screen.

The optional screen in front of the passenger was loved by my daughter, but if you can’t watch a movie on here, I personally don’t see the point. It also makes the whole dashboard looks screen-overload, which takes away from the rest of the well-placed controls, cubbies and kit.

All surfaces above elbow height feel superb, controls are meaty, and the steering wheel is a lesson in elegant design and minimal, commonsense buttons.

Tech-wise, the infotainment is based on Android Automotive OS. Music, video streaming and gaming apps are all there, so you can access personal profiles on the likes of YouTube and Spotify. Kudos for now adding Apple CarPlay maps through the instrument cluster, while all smartphone connectivity is wireless.

The rear seats are firm but comfy and with good headroom, although don’t offer huge space for toes and knees. Nor do they slide or recline, so flexibility points lost there.

2026 Porsche Macan RWD
Well finished but not a lot of space in the back seats of the second-gen Porsche Macan.

If there are tall folk up front, as an adult your knees are up against their seat’s plastic back. That’s not comfy, nor is there a great forward view past those front seats. Thank goodness for the panoramic roof (optional) to let some light in.

Positives I’ve picked are an active bonnet, which pops up at the touch of a button (no need to wrestle to find a clip), and the frunk’s a decent space to keep the charging cables. It’s carpeted, so you’ll need to find somewhere else for your wetsuit.

There’s also the lovely feel of the knurled gear shifter, which joins the start button on the dash itself to keep the centre console clean and open for drinks and your general stuff. But the angled, tucked-away wireless phone charger pad hides your smartphone too well – you will leave it in the car regularly.

We averaged 17.5kWh/100km over 600km, and such was the decent range here, there was no need to public charge it, merely give it a top up overnight using a conventional power point.

After 12 hours of charging this way, and thanks to the Macan’s monster battery, it went from 26 per cent and 136km range, to 38 per cent and 207km range. You’ll need to buy yourself a wall box charger.

2026 Porsche Macan RWD: Verdict

It may be the entry-level, but the Macan RWD is the only one most buyers would ever need.

There’s ample if not scintillating performance, the expected ride and handling skills, rear-drive playfulness on the right road, and a deep sense of quality inside and out.

If this RWD isn’t “Macan” or “Porsche” enough for you, move yourself up the range ladder until you’re satisfied.

But if you remember you’re in the family SUV, you’ll be more than content with the package here, backed up by decent range and impressive (for a performance SUV) economy.

Price remains the main barrier to purchase, and that includes this RWD. Lop $20k off the bottom line and you fancy it’d hit many more shopping lists.

It deserves better than its current sales numbers. A superb EV, but it’s inevitably held back by its cost of entry.
