Revealed! The new look for the 2025 BYD Dolphin EV that is intended to take the fight to the MG4 and GWM Ora
A little more than three years after it was first launched in China it’s time for the 2025 BYD Dolphin to go under the knife.
The refreshed Dolphin has been revealed in a Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) filing.
So we get this first glimpse of the thoroughly refreshed small electric hatch ahead of its launch Down Under next year.

The first pictures show-off how BYD will ditch the current car’s, slightly gawky frontal styling with smarter-looking wider front lamps and a fresh grille design.

Below, the front bumper has lost its boomerang-shaped intakes for a pair of more modest pair or vertical openings.
Fresh alloy wheels and a tweaked rear bumper complete the subtle but effective external updates.
Other minor changes include the addition of a full-width rear light bar which now spans the tailgate and the loss of the traditional ‘Build Your Dreams’ badging that has been dropped for the new ‘BYD’ logo.

Measurements detailed as part of the leak suggest the entry-level BYD will be around 10mm shorter than the current car – likely due to the revised bumpers – but still weigh 1435kg-1600kg.
According to reports, the refresh introduces a new 130kW e-motor that joins the entry model’s 70kW/180Nm output and flagship 150kW/310Nm version.
Like before, the Dolphin will be offered with the familiar 44.9kWh and larger 60.5kWh Blade LFP batteries.

The smaller of the two batteries currently provides up to 340km of WLTP range in Australia while the 150kW Dolphin with the bigger power pack can travel up to 427km on a single charge.
The Dolphin will also come with a panoramic sunroof, plus the option of a black roof, rear privacy glass and more sophisticated driver assist tech thanks to the addition of new front and rear radars and front, side and rear cameras.
There’s no specific word on when the 2025 BYD Dolphin will land in Australia but we expect it to rock up with more competitive pricing and an equipment adjustment to make it more competitive against fellow entry-level EVs the GWM Ora and the MG4, which has had a recent sales boom based on cut-throat drive-away pricing.
To the end of November 2024 there have been 6079 MG4s sold in Australia, 1885 BYD Dolphins and only 1182 GWM Oras.
