Wagons roll! 2027 BMW i3 Touring teased as Neue Klasse expansion continues

The BMW i3 Touring has been teased for the first time and confirmed for production as the first variant of the German brand’s next-generation all-electric sedan.

Previewed via a silhouette image during the global debut of the i3 (picture top), the Touring – or wagon – version of the all-electric 3 Series is expected to share the sedan’s design language and Neue Klasse underpinnings.

Highlighting its added practicality, BMW Group CEO Oliver Zipse said “business customers and families will be particularly delighted” by the confirmation that an i3 Touring is in development.

No further details were released, but the wagon is expected to become the third member of BMW’s Neue Klasse EV family, alongside the i3 sedan and mid-size iX3 SUV. It is tipped to arrive in production around the middle of 2027.

Like the sedan, the i3 Touring is expected to launch with the i3 50 xDrive powertrain, combining dual electric motors producing around 345kW and 645Nm with a large battery pack of about 108kWh (usable).

The system also incorporates silicon carbide inverters to improve efficiency.

BMW has previously indicated a driving range of up to 900km on the WLTP cycle for the i3 sedan.

The more practical Touring body style is also expected to be offered on the next-generation combustion-powered 3 Series, which will adopt elements of the Neue Klasse design language but continue on an updated version of BMW’s CLAR platform, supporting petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Also coming soon is the wild quad motor M3 EV. All-up 40 new or updated BMW models will employ all or some Neue Klasse tech and design by the end of 2027.
