Toyota HiLux BEV price announced: It’s cheaper than what was expected, but it’s still the most expensive HiLux ever!

Toyota has confirmed pricing for its first battery-electric Toyota HiLux BEV, which will arrive in Australia in May from $74,990 plus on-road costs.

That pricing positions the HiLux BEV above the top-selling HiLux diesel range, which tops out at $71,990 plus ORCs.

But it is lower than earlier expectations of a six-figure starting price.

The dual-cab-only HiLux BEV line-up will comprise three variants, opening with the SR cab-chassis at $74,990, followed by the SR pick-up at $76,490 and topping out with the SR5 pick-up at $82,990.

These figures place the electric ute as the most expensive HiLux offered locally, above the $74,310 HiLux GR Sport that was discontinued in late 2025.

The HiLux BEV is the third electric ute to go on sale in Australia, joining the more expensive LDV eT60 and the more affordable KGM Musso EV.

Toyota has consistently positioned the HiLux BEV as a fleet-focused product, particularly for mining, government and construction applications, although it will also be available to private buyers.

Whether its popularity is buoyed by the current spike in diesel prices – and whether the diesel HiLux is impacted – will be interesting to see.

Toyota says the HiLux BEV is designed to reduce tailpipe emissions for businesses while maintaining the durability expectations associated with the HiLux nameplate.

Power comes from a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing a combined 144kW and 468Nm, paired with a 59.2kWh lithium-ion battery.

Driving range is rated at up to 315km (NEDC) for pick-up variants, dropping to 245km for the cab-chassis, while DC fast-charging capability of up to 150kW allows a 10–80 per cent recharge in around 30 minutes.

As previously reported, key capability metrics remain well below those of the diesel HiLux, underlining its intended use case.

Payload is expected to be around 715kg compared with more than one tonne for diesel models, while braked towing is capped at 2000kg versus 3500kg.

Range is also significantly lower than traditional combustion utes, reinforcing its suitability for short-distance operations.

Toyota Australia vice president of sales, marketing and franchise operations John Pappas said the HiLux BEV represented an important step in the brand’s broader electrification strategy.

“Offering both Australian businesses and private buyers the choice of a HiLux with zero tailpipe emissions is a crucial step forward in providing consumers the right powertrain for the right application, at the right time,” he said.

Toyota will also shortly expand its passenger vehicle offering in Australia with the bZ4X Touring, while the C-HR+ compact electric SUV is due in mid-2027.

The HiLux BEV has been developed on the same ladder-frame platform as the diesel model, with modifications to accommodate the battery and electric drivetrain, including a revised suspension setup and reinforcement to handle demanding conditions.

Toyota says extensive local testing, including trials in mining environments and extreme temperatures, has been undertaken ahead of its Australian launch.

While the introduction of an electric HiLux marks a significant milestone for Toyota in Australia, the brand has made clear it does not expect the BEV to replace diesel variants in the near term, instead targeting specific use cases where shorter operating cycles and depot charging make electrification viable.
