Toyota HiLux BEV key numbers revealed ahead of 2026 arrival in Australia: They’re … interesting

Preliminary figures have been released in the UK for the new Toyota HiLux dual cab BEV coming to Australia in 2026.

Battery size, range between recharges, towing capability, payload and performance are all limited.

The numbers certainly demonstrate why Toyota is saying the HiLux BEV will have a fleet – and especially mining – focus when it launches in Australia.

In Europe, the HiLux BEV comes with a 59.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack made up of five 16-cell modules.

An e-motor on each axle will generate permanent all-wheel drive, rather than the part-time mechanical 4×4 system with low range and diff locks employed by diesel HiLuxes.

Toyota says the BEV will employ a Multi-Terrain Select system that adapts vehicle performance to suit different off-road terrains using brake and torque control, equivalent to driving in low range.

The HiLux BEV’s front motor is rated at 250Nm and the rear 268.6Nm. Combined power output is 143kW.

The diesel 2.8-litre HiLux generates 150kW/500Nm as a six-speed auto.

The targeted WLTP driving range is approximately 240km. Recharging speeds have not been stated by Toyota, but have been reported as up to 150kW DC.

The target payload is 715kg, versus more than a tonne for a diesel dual cab.

Braked towing capability is 1600kg, versus 3500kg for every model in the new ninth-generation HiLux range.

The HiLux BEV is estimated to reach 0-100km/h in nine seconds and top out at 140km/h.

Kerb weight is 2420kg, which is about 200kg north of where a dual cab diesel auto 4×4 sits.

While Toyota Australia has yet to issue local numbers for the HiLux BEV, EV Central understands they do not vary greatly from Europe.

That means the Isuzu D-Max EV already sold in Europe – and expected to come to Australia has the edge on it.

The HiLux BEV uses the same IMV ladder frame as the diesel HiLux. Its battery size has been restricted to ensure it can fit between the frame rails.

Toyota says specific measures have been taken to protect battery from damage or water ingress.

The 700mm wading depth is the same as the diesel HiLux, as is the 207mm ground clearance and 29 degree approach and 24 degree departure angles. Breakover is four degrees less at 20 degrees.

While the HiLux BEV’s numbers aren’t going to wow diesel dual cab ute fans, Toyota has stressed the vehicles isn’t targeted at private buyers, even though they’ll be able to purchase it.

“These are vehicles that will be used largely in short distance operations that need the payload and passenger capacity and are able to be recharged easily and economically,” said Toyota Australia marketing chief Sean Hanley.

“Where this will have massive appeal will be mining.”

In the UK the price of the HiLux BEV is being estimated at 60,000 pounds ($120,000), but a two-model range will at least start under $100,000 here.

With the new diesel HiLux’s pricing topping out at $71,990 plus on-road costs, it appears certain the BEV will be the most expensive model in the line-up.
