The 2025 MG Cyberster lands in Australia! New price range revealed as all-electric sports car touches down with the Porsche Boxster in its sights
The MG Cyberster has officially landed in Australia ahead of its launch here in Q4 this year, and it’s brought good news with it, with the Chinese brand shaving $20k off its expected price window.
We had been told that MG was targeting a $100k-$150k price window for its dual-motor electric performance vehicle, but that number has now been revised, with the brand now forecasting a price range between $100k and $130k.
And yes, that’s still a big window, but it does promise to make the Cyberster a little more accessible, and even more so if it lands at the early part of that band.
We’ve had a closer look at Australian specifics for the powertrain, too, with the MG Cyberster featuring a dual-motor AWD setup delivering a total 375kW of power. That’s enough, says MG, to see the performance EV clip 100km/h in a brisk 3.2 seconds in its Super Sport Mode (accessed through a red button on the flat-bottom steering wheel.
Speaking of the interior, you’ll enter it through skyward-opening scissor doors, which raise and close at the touch of a button, and – when in the driver’s seat – you’ll be greeted by a three-screen wraparound-style cockpit. The convertible roof is automatic, of course, and there’s an eight-speed BOSE stereo and 20-inch alloys on the standard feature list, too.
Asked “why now” for the Cyberster in Australia, Peter Ciao, CEO of MG Motor Australia, said the vehicle was the realisation of a dream, both for MG staff and its customers.
“I trust that everyone has a performance car dream,” he says. “And electric technology gives this dream a much higher opportunity. If it was based on traditional technology, you have to pay triple the price, but electric makes this possible.
“Seven years ago I was asked a similar question ‘MG is a sports car brand, why is your first car an SUV?’. My answer is that I’m a business man, I need to survive first, and SUVs are popular.
“But now MG is in the top 10 (of brands in Australia), I think it’s time we go and achieve this dream.”
Still doesn’t make sense. In the UK the full fat Cyberster is $A106K (ish). Given the usual higher RRP prices there (the MG4 is 25% higher…) and even given a bit of extra profiteering for initial demand, it should be closer to $90K. Which would also attract novated lease buyers, being under the LCT.
Personally, I’ll wait for the sweeter handling/riding, quite fast enough (and cheaper) RWD jobbie.
