“That’s the plan”: XPeng G7 electric family SUV confirmed for Australia with pricing set to undercut the Tesla Model Y

The bold new XPeng G7 family SUV is confirmed for Australia in 2026 and will undercut the Tesla Model Y on pricing.

“That is the plan,” confirmed Jason Clarke, CEO of XPeng’s Australian importer TrueEV.

The G7 only broke cover last month in China and is due on sale there later in 2025.

It will be part of a double-barrelled XPeng attack on the local large SUV market along with an updated version of the G9.

But where the G9 is intended to target a more luxurious buying audience the G7 will be pitched straight at the family market and priced under the top-selling Model Y.

It is also expected to have seven seats, although that has yet to be officially confirmed by XPeng.

“It’s a bit larger, it’s bigger than the Y, it’s just roomier, bigger, more storage and at a cheaper price point than Model Y,” confirmed Clarke.

The five seat G6 SUV already undercuts the Model Y and the price gap will grow with the Tesla Model Y Juniper due mid-year, starting from $63,400.

Adding the G7 into that space will heap more pressure on the Tesla, especially if it comes – as expected – with seven seats. The Model Y does not offer third row seating in Australia.

In fact there are only a couple of seven seat electric SUVs on sale in Australia – the Kia EV9 and the Mercedes-Benz EQB. But they cost tens of thousands of dollars more than where the G7 should slot in – at or under $60,000.

Detailed specification for G7 is yet to be confirmed, but like the G6, standard and long range models can be expected.

Clarke confirmed TrueEV is currently evaluating how the G7 and the updated G9 – which is also expected to add a third row of seats – would slot together into its line-up.

“We are expecting both of those [G7 and G9] in 2026,” said Clarke.

“Whether they cannibalise one another I don’t know, but we are obviously doing evaluation to see which models will work best for the Australian market.

“There is a lot of excitement around the G7 and its launch, and the G9 is just a beautiful car.

“They are very approximate though in terms of the potential buyer and what market that hits, so we have to make a judgement on that.”

But Clarke was emphatic the current plan was to take both.

“Obviously, with our ambition, we want to build out a robust range and that’s the G6 through to the G9 and everything within it.

“So we would want it and we want to make sure the market is there and its efficient for us to bring them in and build out the demand for it.

“So at this point, both are slated for 2026.”

Fresh numbers recently published in China reveal a claimed CLTC range up to 702km for the G7, fitted with an 80.8kWh LFP battery pack. That will likely come down a bit when the WLTP test protocols are applied. A smaller 68.5kWh battery pack offers a 602km range.

Both battery packs link with a rear-mounted 218kW e-motor. A dual motor all-wheel-drive version is expected later.

The G7 measures up at 4829mm long, 1925mm wide and 1655mm tall with a 2890mm wheelbase. That means it’s longer than the Model Y with an identical wheelbase. The G9 is also shorter than the G7 but has a 100mm shorter wheelbase.

The updated G9 is yet to be revealed in China, but Clarke was clear on what its positioning would be in Australia.

“The G9 comes in for added luxury,” he explained. “Feature sets are pretty consistent, but the G9 does feel like a genuine premium offering. It is super-comfy and luxurious, that’s for sure.”
